NP Rank:
Who will punch their Hall of Fame ticket this Sunday?
Once Super Bowl XLIII has finally been put two rest one of two Quarterback that I have had little or no respect for over the past ten years will have secured his inclusion into the American Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
Super Bowl XXXIV M.V.P. Kurt Warner, who beat the Tennessee Titans by no more than half a yard to collect the tightest Super Bowl victory this reporter has ever witnessed will lead the pro sports version of the Washington Generals, the Cardinals of Arizona into battle on Sunday evening. Un-drafted, Warner an Arena Football League veteran stormed the NFL delivering Head Coach Mike Martz and the St. Louis Rams to the promise land and claiming the aforementioned Super Bowl M.V.P. award during the 1999 season.
I for one was not convinced.
Before Warner had taken command of the Rams starting Quarterback position Trent Green had been the projected starter and the prognosis for team Ram was strong and the bandwagon was beginning to get a little bit crowded. Fast forward eighteen weeks and Mr. Warner had been anointed. The awards, sponsorships and twenty-four hours media circus overwhelmed the Warner Wagon.
Over the next two years Kurt Warner and the Rams were exactly who I thought they were.
The Rams were eliminated during the wild-card round of the 2000 season before collapsing as the overwhelming favourite in Super Bowl XXXVI.
Recently I’ve heard whispers of Hall of Fame with Warner’s name attached and much like the prom queen I’ve spurned those advances. A half yard victory coupled with a massive implosion just doesn’t equate to Hall of Fame numbers.
Regardless of what sports writers think about Kurt Warner’s blue jeans and retrofit eighties coiffe capturing Super Bowl’s to bookend a decade in the NFL, the majority of which was spent as a staring Quarterback is an accomplishment that not only qualifies one for admission into a place as prestigious as Canton it virtually stamps your ticket and sends out the invitations for you.
