Why Did Forrest Griffin Run Out After UFC 101? A Broken Jaw?
The UFC 101 results are in and the one question many MMA fans found themselves asking after the fight card is: why did Forrest Griffin run out of the octagon after his UFC 101 loss to Anderson Silva? It appears that Forrest Griffin ran because he suffered a dislocated jaw during his fight with the Brazilian.
The Brazilian knocked down Griffin with a right hand at 3:23 of the first round of the Forrest Griffin-Anderson Silva non-title match. After the punch, Griffin fell to the ground and raised his hands as if to surrender.
When he came to his senses, Forrest Griffin ran out of the octagon, even trying to push past a doctor who was trying to examine him.
“He might be in Georgia by now, he ran out and I haven’t seen him since,” White, the UFC president, joked.
So what happened to Forrest Griffin? There are a couple of possible explanations for why Forrest Griffin ran out of the octagon. Perhaps Griffin was still out of it after getting knocked out and didn't know what he was doing. Or perhaps he was so disappointed by how the fight turned out. After all, Silva completely dominated Griffin throughout the match.
Another theory suggests that Forrest Griffin had a broken jaw and ran out of the ring to get more medical help. People in Forrest Griffin's camp have come out and said that Griffin suffered a dislocated jaw during his fight with Silva. Griffin reportedly ran out of the ring and skipped the UFC 101 post-fight press conference to get medical tests after he dislocated his jaw and was unable to hear in one ear.
Or maybe Griffin knew that he had just been completely outmatched by Silva, a fighter that many consider the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, and simply wanted to get the hell out of there.

why forrest?
at 08:49 on August 9th, 2009
I think it was purely disappointment, anger and maybe a little embarrassment of losing that made him run out.
I think he is a great fighter but he was just know match for silva, i knew he wouldn't be.
Hopefully this doesn't set him back too much, he is great for the sport and had some really entertaining fights.

OK, so let's say that Griffin had a dislocated jaw. I have seen many boxing matches where fighters have suffered dislocated jaws, broken noses, even shattered cheekbones and continued to fight. Mir broke Sylvia's arm in several places and he still wanted to fight. Urijah Faber broke both his hands in the fight with Mike Brown and continued to fight. There are innumerable instances of fighters being injured, even seriously, and not running away. I refuse to believe that Griffin's medical condition was so dire that he could not stay long enough to even shake Silva's hand. He was outclassed and embarrassed, and in his heart I think he knew he would lose.
The UFC threw Griffin a bone with the $60,000 "Fight of the Night" bonus. Since when is a one-sided, three and half minute beatdown the "Fight of the Night"? In the last 15 UFC events, only about 3 "Fight of the Night" awards were given to fights that did not go to a decision, and none of them ended in the first round. Those fight were back and forth battles that ended late in the second or third round. Maybe the UFC got Forrest Griffin confused with Tyson Griffin, who has won "Fight of the Night" 5 of his last 7 fights (all of which went to decision).

I completely agree! He was so used to winning, he was on top, and of course, Anderson Silva beats him. Silva has beaten everyone. Griffin was simply embarrassed. I'm embarrassed for him. He only made it worse by running after the fight...

I love how all of these people on here are such experts in the actual art of fighting and sports medicine to make assumptions as to what amount of pain a fighter can take and what amount of pain they can't. I'd love to see if even one third of the people posting here know what it feels like to dislocate a joint (not just a finger, mind you...).
For every injury, there are many different levels of pain - for even the same type of injury. It depends on the location and severity. And a break is in no where near the same realm of pain as a dislocation. I'll tell you from experience that, I'll take 3 breaks to one dislocation any day! And then it depends on if the dislocation pops back into place by itself (subfluxation) or if it needs to be popped back in by someone else (or yourself). Magnify the pain in that scenario by several.
He probably ran out not only in pain but also in panic. If his jaw didn't pop back in, not only is it excruciatingly painful, but the only thing he's thinking is that something in his universe is definitely wrong and someone needs to fix it. Especially if you lose your hearing. These are serious and potentially permanent, life altering injuries we're talking about here folks. Not just a broken bone or nose. I don't blame him. And I guarantee, 100% of you guys trashing-talking him would do the same thing with this injury (surely even far, far less) - except you won't stop for the doc, you'll go straight for your mommies.

Well...now that the expert (aka Forrest nob slobber) has spoken; we can all just shut up. I know it's hard t believe he would act like this after a disapointing loss. Even though he acted like a little b!tch when Jardine knocked him out.
at 13:41 on August 10th, 2009
The fighters are train to give out pain and to take pain, it's the art of fighting. No pain, no gain, it's just that simple and for you to try to use that B/S about different type of pain levels. As a fighter, serious injury doesn't make you panic because you learn to ignore the pain. No matter what type of sports that you are in, you are train to suck it up. People get hurt in sports all the time and still put out their best effort to be the best with no regret, thats why only the strong survive. Serious injury is always sever on a fighters plate, it's how they finish their plate that will show how hungry one is. (NO PAIN, NO GAIN or NO GUTS NO GLORY) NO EXCUSE

We didn't see Rich Franklin run after Anderson destroyed him twice...
at 13:14 on August 10th, 2009
Absolutely. Franklin took that beating like a man. Franklin also put up more of a fight. I really think Forrest came into that fight already having lost. He lost psychologically. Silva playing with Forrest only made it worse.
And then Forrest gave up. Embarrassed, he ran. He's got a lot of explaining to do to mma fans, particularly his fans. He's likely lost a lot of fans because heart is really the only distinguishing characteristic to Griffin and he lost all heart in that fight.
at 14:23 on August 10th, 2009
Ok, so now we know that Griffin is, per MMAWeekly, physically fine but not dealing well with the loss to Silva. Again, he was outclassed and embarrassed.
Maybe now we can get a psychologist, instead of an orthopedist, to tell me I have no clue what I'm talking about. He should be able to afford one with his unmerited $60,000.
at 10:40 on August 9th, 2009
That whole fight Griffin was forced into the role of the aggressor which everyone should know its not him he actually landed on Silva and if he didn't leave his jaw out there for someone that is as dangerous as Silva with counters it would have been a decent fight that would have lasted much longer and might have been a good fight. Forrest just didn't seem Forrest. And if you didn't watch the post fight conference Dana mentioned how emotional Forrest can get about his fights and he knew he had a chance in this fight and he was dissapointed with his performance so he left it's understandable.
Forrest was just simply outmatched when you compare his game plan to Silva's speed it wasn't a good match up that night. If you watch closely to the fight closely you can tell Forrest was trying to think way to much he wouldn't pull the trigger. There were a few kicks or big punches he started to through but for some reason midway through it he stopped. I think another day another game plan Forrest can comeback and if not win atleast make it a fight for the ages.
at 13:53 on August 10th, 2009
Do you seriously think Forrest had a chance with Anderson Silva? Come on. It wouldn't be a good match up any night.
Who thought this fight would last beyond the first round? If so, you are delusional.
at 10:45 on August 9th, 2009
It is a clear testament to Anderson's supreme power that he would totally humiliate an outstanding warrior like Forrest Griffin. Most people are quick to riducle Forrest, but he is one of the greatest people in the UFC. With all the speculation going around it is overwhelming and unsure what happened. We should all be so lucky that it is only a broken ego, and not a serious injury.
at 10:50 on August 9th, 2009
Run Forest Run!!...couldnt resist that one.
but yes Forest is a tough guy sure he had a broken jaw and ran out to get it checked out and if he couldnt hear out of one ear thats scarry probably wanted to get to the hospital right away i would have done the same.
at 11:45 on August 9th, 2009
This match should have never happened IMO.
How do you match a guy who is one of the best, if not the best counterpuncher in the UFC? The guy could dodge a tidal wave if he wanted. Against a guy that is a pure brawler and an for the most part an inside fighter?
at 12:52 on August 9th, 2009
Assuming Forrest really did break/dislocate his jaw, he could've stayed in there to shake Anderson's hand. I think the real reason he ran out is because he was so embarrassed to lose to a person who was stepping back and tagged him lightly in the jaw. Hell, the entire fight was embarrasing to Forrest. I feel for the guy but he didn't have to run out.
RUN FORREST RUN!
at 08:08 on August 10th, 2009
Tagged him lightly? Do you see Griffins head jolt when that punch caught him? There was nothing light about it. Anderson is simply of those guys who can get tremendous power behind a punch that only travels a few inches. That's one of the reasons he's been so successful.
at 11:03 on August 10th, 2009
ACTUALLY THAT WAS A LIGHT TAG, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DONE IF HE PUT ALL HIS FORCE BEHIND IT!
at 11:13 on August 10th, 2009
ACTUALLY, IT WAS A RATHER LIGHT TAG! I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE END RESULT IF HE PUT ALL HIS FORCE BEHIND IT, A BROKE FACE?
at 13:31 on August 9th, 2009
I totally agree with everyone who says Forrest should not have run out of the ring, it is poor sportsmanship not to congratulate someone who just rocked you, BUT, if the lights are dimming, you cant hear anything and your jaw is swinging freely, self preservation naturally kicks in. If the only thing Forrest suffered was just a broken jaw he should have stayed there and shook Anderson's hand. As much as I like Forrest, Silva deserved that courtesy and respect. Any official word on Forrest?
at 13:48 on August 9th, 2009
and you too "big" daddy
at 20:44 on August 9th, 2009
Forest is just some dumb redneck who lacks skill and talent. He is loved by fans who think Kimbo Slice is a great fighter who "just got caught". Forest just sells tickets...that is it and that is all. His fight with Bonnar was lame, two no talent ass clowns throwing their hands as crazy as they could. Look at bonnars last fight or his fight before that! Both these guys are horrible. Forest has no heart...he quit.
at 09:23 on August 10th, 2009
if your going to insult someone who is a world-class athlete give him the courtesy of spelling his name right. Granted, he should have conducted himself in a more proffesional manner but I would like to see anyone get a broken or dislocated jaw stay and shake hands and congratulate. Forrest is one of the best in the UFC, you may not like his scrappy style, but I would like to see you "brawl" with him.
at 14:10 on August 9th, 2009
Lets see all you guys get rocked in the head a few times, dislocate your jaw, lose hearing in one ear and all in three minutes. How would you react? Dont know. Would you need a doctor? Probably. Fact is Forrest Griffin has heart and has always had excellent sportsmanship in all his fights. That is why he is so loved he is a great all around athlete in every sense. The fact that he ran out shows he was seriously hurt. So go ahead and sit behind your computer screens and talk about how poorly he behaved (IMO Silva was disrespectful during the fight and one of the most arrogant fighters in the UFC) but until your in that position can you really say what you would do and the level of pain you would be feeling? So give him a break geez you people are harsh... jerks.
at 19:44 on August 9th, 2009
sure you can gain strength, technique, and endurance, but heart is something you either have or dont. And forrest griffin is bursting with heart, so if anyone is trying to judge him, look at yourself first. I think alisa said it the best:)
at 20:28 on August 9th, 2009
So nobody here can have an opinion of how Forrest acted but you contradict yourself by stating how Silva acted (while he was breaking Forrest...Which nobody could do).
Don't be a hypocrite.
Regardless of why Forrest ran out of the arena it doesn't make him any less of a warrior...but I'm sure he regrets running out.
at 09:25 on August 10th, 2009
agreed. Forrest still has my respect. Silva is scary calm though.
at 09:29 on August 10th, 2009
I agree. I think Forrest was HURT, not showing poor sportsmanship. However, I do not agree that Silva was disrespectful throughout the fight. He is a calm, patient fighter who is comparable to a snake waiting on the perfect time for a strike. He waits on other ppl to make mistakes and capatilizes on them. That is not disrespectful or arrogant that is intelligent fighting. When he was telling Forrest to fight all he wanted was to do what he trained to do, not practice dance steps around the ring. Both of these fighters are DAMN good.
