Why winning the World Series matters only to the Yankees

I'm fed up with the Yankees.  27 championships in a span of 87 years?  That's about once per three years on average.  Before tonight, there were a lot of poor 8 and 9 year olds that had never witnessed a Yankee championship, plus a boatload more of 10-15 year olds that were way too young to remember their '00 championship victory over the abomination called the NY Mets.

Which brings us to tonight.  I really didn't think Jeter would ever be lucky enough to win another championship.  Look, he's a singles machine, we all know that.  But it would take 3 Jeters to score one run, and Jeter was not the main reason the Yanks won this year, or the four other times they won in the 90's.  Was he a component, a factor the helped them to victories?  Yes, he was definitely more valuable than Cano, but less valuable than the great A-Rod.

Oh the pain, as Joe Benigno would say.  What's the point of watching MLB if the Yankees are just going to win it every few years?  There is none, really.  I heavily defended the Yankee championships in '96, then '98-'00 because that team was built through the farm system.  Everybody had an equal chance to get Jeter, Bernie, Mariano, Pettitte, and Posada but only the Yankees were brilliant enough to draft all five guys in a span of four years.

But the '09 team just reeks of money, a titantic full of corporate money.  There's no way that they win this year if they didn't overbid to get Teixeira, CC, and AJ.  They committed more than $400 million dollars to only three players.  To put it in better perspective, $400 million dollars is more than the Marlins payroll for the entire decade of '00s.  They got Teixeira because they overbid the Angels by $20 million.  It was so brilliant because it took away a power bat from their rivals the Angels and Red Sox, tilting it completely in the Yankees favor.  I'm not saying Teixeira was very good in the postseason, but he made the Yankees a runaway regular season monster because his prowess at bat and glove were tops in the MLB.  He will most likely win his first AL MVP award for his fantastic regular season play in 2009.

The Yankees were able to afford all these shiny new toys because they swindled NYCitizens into forking over a billion dollars to build their shiny new ballpark in the Bronx.  Yankee Stadium used to be respected because it stood for something sacred and it had the best and most knowledgeable fans in the world.  Now, the Stadium is visited by corporate types who take their fancy trophy dates and probably have no idea what the difference is between a 2 seamer and a 4 seamer.

Am I bitter? You betcha.  I just see no point in watching MLB anymore and plan to abstain from it for at least the next 12 months.  Trashed are my RSS subscriptions to Rob Neyer's Sweetspot, NY Times baseball page, Ken Rosenthal's insider, and the twenty plus others baseball related RSSs.  This winter, I've vowed to focus on more positive things like listening to music, playing my guitar, instead of listening to endless calls from happy Yankee fans to WFAN.

So what's the point if you're a fan of one of the other 29 lousy teams?  You're just killing yourself to get 1/29 of two-thirds of the pie anyways.  There's almost no chance of winning, except if you're the Yankees.  They should just rename it the Yankees Series to make it way more accurate.

That is a lot of money. I would not give a dime to pro sports. That money would be better spend helping the homeless, the unemployed, the students and the environment.

That of course would be my personal two cents worth of opinion.

It is a good post and well written. I enjoyed the read.

If you move "only" in your title to precede "the Yankees," your writing will be more accurate.
