Washington Nationals Catcher Wilson Ramos Abducted
Wilson Ramos, catcher for the Washington Nationals, was kidnapped in Venezuela.
Four armed kidnappers snatched 24-year-old Wilson Ramos from his family's home in Santa Ines. The SUV used in Ramos' abduction was found abandoned in a nearby town, say police.
Wilson Ramos had just finished his rookie season with the Nationals and has emerged as a rising star. Ramos had returned to his native Venezuela to play for the Aragua Tigers, a local winter-league team.
Police have confirmed that Wilson Ramos is still alive, but it is unclear if any ransom demands were made yet.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen now,” said Enrique Brito, a longtime official in the Venezuelan winter league who is close with Ramos’s family. “It’s going to be bad for the culture, for the league, for everything. Wilson is one of the best players that we had. It’s bad. It’s real bad, for all Venezuelan people and fans. We are all shocked.”
