Wimbledon Blogs And a Second Life Match
While there are plenty of people blogging about Wimbledon, it's interesting to see how some other folk are looking at bridging distance and sports using technology.
Take this guy for example, who says it might be possible to watch real time matches, with Avatars for players, in real time in games like Second Life.
In the lead up to the event, and with what I know about the data we have, I decided to take on a mini proof of concept to bring Wimbledon to Second Life. The first point is that this is a proof of concept. The build is designed to show the various ideas rather than be a 1:1 representation of the actual place. That’s very possible, but would take more days to build.
Secondly, lots of people could attend, the shots show only one avatar.
Back in real life, the 2nd-best player in the world is blogging for the Times Online and answering fans' questions.
I went to Wimbledon last year and to the Roland Garros the year before and I had the feeling that you are more supported and appreciated by the people in London than in Paris. Considering how hard Wimbledon is for you, I think this is a plus to help you winning the tournament, hopefully this year. Do you agree?
Cristina Diaz
Rafa: Many thanks. I feel support at both places and I love being here. You might be right that here the crowds tend to support me a lot. I am very grateful for that.
And here's one from Casey Dellacqua, from the women's Singles:
I’m really happy that I’ve now got a chance to make it to the fourth round of Wimbledon. It was another tough one against Pauline Parmentier in the second round but I found a way to win without playing my best.
That’s important in grand slams because you can’t always play fantastic tennis but you have to find a way to get through.
Plenty of other writers blogging about it as well:
It's also a busy day for Jamie Murray, who has had his hair cut short so looks less like a latterday member of the Hair Bear Bunch than he used to. He's got two doubles matches today - the men's first with Max Mirnyi, then the mixed with Liezel Huber. With only one other match scheduled to be played between those two, Jamie will have little time to cool down after the first before he has to start warming up again for the second.
Maybe he'll just stay warmed up for the duration by jogging non-stop around the grounds for the hour or so between his contests, or if the timings are right he might even get to see a little bit of his brother Andy's match against Richard Gasquet on Centre Court.
In breaking news, the caricature of Roger Federer by artist Gerald Scarfe has been stolen. The image was one of many that served as a distraction from the long ticket lines.
Anyway, feel free to email a comment if you have any inside information as to the 'missing Federer'. We can solve this mystery together. Just like the Scooby Doo gang. But without that annoying Scrappy bloke. You can see why they made him the baddie in the first movie, can't you? Oh. Sorry. You haven't seen it yet? I digress.

A truly memorable experience! I was lucky enough to get the centre court tickets to witness Roddick battling it out against Tipservic! It was a brilliant match and the whole atmosphere was simply amazing. It was a long day with long queues, but the experience was worth each and every minute spent in the queue! I'll most certainly be there next year!
