UPDATE: Gilbert Arenas of Washington Wizards gets no jail time for a handgun violation, according to CNN reports. The Washington Post reports Arenas received two years of probation time. He will also serve 30 days in a halfway house. Arenas was ordered to serve 400 hours of community service and pay a $5,000 donation to a crime victim's fund.

Arenas Awaits Sentencing: Five Years Or Probation?

Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas is scheduled to be sentenced today. The disgraced player was suspended by the NBA for handgun violations. Arenas was charged for bringing four guns into his team's change room at Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. on December 24, 2009 to settle a gambling dispute with his teammate Javaris Crittenton. Subsequently, Arenas was accused of inappropriate behavior when he tried to make light of the situation in his comments on his Twitter page, which was eventually shut down.

The incident allegedly involved Arenas threatening to shoot Crittenton in the face. Arenas than left four guns in front of Crittenton's locker with a note that asked Crittenton to pick one of the guns. In the wake of the scandal that followed, Arenas claimed the incident was a "joke," which only further aggravated the situation leading to eventual indefinite NBA suspension without pay. In February, Arenas wrote an open letter to the Washington Post, in which he apologized for the incident, making light of a serious situation and failing to be a better role model. It has been a difficult year for Arenas as today's sentencing comes just weeks after the player's estranged mother Mary Francis Robinson passed away.

On January 15, Arenas, a three-time NBA All-Star, pleaded guilty to a felony charge of carrying an unlicensed pistol outside a home or business. Arenas will be sentenced later today and is facing up to five years in prison. He will most likely not get more than six months, reports Sports Illustrated.

His teammate Javaris Crittenton was sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation in January. Crittenton also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor gun possession charge.

The team, including coach Flip Saunders, appears to be supportive of Arenas.

Our thoughts are definitely with him. I wish I was back there today and could be over there. I think it would be nice to be there to give him some support."

There was no note of Arenas' sentencing on Washington Wizards website earlier today.
