World Cup Group C Standings: Rules For Advancing To The Knockout Round

It is getting crowded and messy in Group C of the FIFA World Cup. Here are the standings at the time of this post.

Group C Standings

Country       GP    W     L    T   GF   GA  Points

Slovenia         2         1       0     1     3       2        4

USA                2        0        0     2     3       3        2

England        2       0      0     2    1      1      2

Algeria           2        0        0      1     0       1       2

Now the question for a lot of American fans is what will it take for the US world cup soccer team to advance to the knockout round, assuming they beat Algeria in their match next week?

 Besides wins, losses and ties deciding the fate of Team USA a critical element is Goals, more specifically, goal differential between the teams.

Here are the rules or criteria for teams to advance to the knock out round from the Group round

FIFA World Cup Group Tiebreaker Rules

  1. greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
  2. goal difference in all group matches;
  3. greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.

If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three then the following will be used to determine which teams advance to the knockout round.

  1. greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
  2. goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
  3. greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
  4. drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

Bottom line the USA must beat Algeria and it would greatly help their chances of advancing by scoring 2 more goals. The same applies for England in their remaining match with Slovenia.

What if ENG-SLV 2-2 and USA - ALG 0-0.  Who makes it through?  USA will be at par with England on points, goal difference and number of goals sccored.

Canada advanced to the quarter-finals for the Golden Cup back in 2000 because they were tie will all tie-breakers with South Korea. And they won the cup that year!

I little clarification; if the USA win, then they are guaranteed through to the next round, regardless of the England-Slovenia match result.  A 0-0 tie with Algeria and a 2-2 tie for England, then it will go down to the "drawing of lots"...believe it or not.

Not true, if USA win 1-0 and England win 10-0, England will go through on Goal Difference

USA win in fact does guarantee that they will advance regardless of how many goals England scores.  If both USA and England win their matches tomorrow both teams will have more points (USA 5 point & England 5 points) than Slovenia who would stay at 4 points if England beats them.

thats not true, if usa win 1-0 and england wins 10-0 then they both advance, but england will be 1st and usa 2nd based on goal diff.

Is true because the U.S would have 5 pts and Solv would have 4 pts. ALL THE U.S HAS TO DO TO ADVANCE IS WIN!

Dude... if USA wins then USA moves on....if England win, England moves on.  If both England and USA lose, they both go home.  There's no goal difference in these scenarios...   TIE!  if tie all around... 0-0 all around... USA and Slovenia move on... because USA scored 3 goals total and England has only scored 1

Haha, soccer, what an idiot. There is absolutely nothing in the world that would cause us to name our sport soccer. The key is in the name - a "foot" and a "ball".

Sorry Bulldog, more English-speakers the world over refer to football as a game other than soccer/futball/fussball/association football/whatever--whether it be US rules, Gaelic, Aussie rules, or Canadian rules.  So for the majority of us English speakers, football is not soccer.  So laugh it up in your close minded little world.  To the majority of us, you're just wrong.

this article is lame.  it says "bottom line, usa must beat algeria".  that's wrong.  there are scenarios where US could advance without beating algeria.  the author should look up the meaning of "bottom line".  you had the chance to write an informative article that explained the different scenarios and you fell way short.  thanks alot- for nothing.

Should REALLY be called "Head" ball, 'cause they always touching & throwing ball with hands, not foots.

foots? what a lovely use of grammar!

If you try to make a "funny" then sorry buddy.  so "UNFUNNY".  If you use the same logic then it would still be called Football... since 95% of the time you use your foot to handle the ball in a soccer match lol.

USARULES

Well, that one example is funny, ENG 2-2, and USA 0-0, They would be completely the same numbers. But it won't come to that. The U.S. is too potent while Eng is having too much trouble putting in goals. I seriously doubt we end up with 2 ties. US is going, believe that!

What a malinformed article.  Ranking of the teams in a group is set by: 1. Points 2. Goal Differential 3. Goals Scored 4. If just two teams still tied then: 4a. head to head result                                                   4b. coin toss 4. If still three teams tied then: 4a. Points between matches with only these 3 teams                                               4b. Goal Differentail of matches with only these 3 teams                                               4c. Goals scored of matches with only these 3 teams                                               4d. Coin toss The only time there has ever been a coin toss was in 1990 and it was to determine seeding in the elimination round, not to see who advanced.  Right now in group C whom ever wins by the largest margin of victory between England and the USA on the 23rd will be the group winner. Slovinia, USA, and England all are guaranteed a spot in the 2nd round with wins, Algeria would still need help to advance even if they win (need England to loose or win bylarge enough margin to cause slovinia to have a worse goal differential) And THAT is the real deal. Go Yankees, Go Vikings, Go USA.

49-48-1

Engage brain before putting mouth in gear. If two teams are tied, more points is the same as the head to head result.  If points are even, that means the game was a tie, so differential and goals were also tied, so on to the coin flip.  The point is that the same rules specified in the article, probably quoting FIFA rules, works for 2 teams as well as for more than 2, so it's simpler, doesn't require a special case. Corrected by a Cheesehead, ouch!  Go Brewers, Go Pack, Go USA! (For the curious, the Packers are 49-48-1 against the Vikings all-time, regular and post-season; may be in trouble . . . but only until OUR Hall of Fame QB Favre retires.)
