Yorkshire: They're Doing Well Up North
Graham Dobson alerted me to this gem: if Yorkshire were an independent nation, it would be #11 in the Gold Medal standings for the 2012 Summer Olympics, with five Golds. Overall, Yorkshire has claimed 10 Olympic medals this year.
Yorkshire is the largest county in Britain, and has produced its fair share of famous athletes and celebrities. For example:
- Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee (London 2012 Triathlon champs)
- Jessica Ennis (Heptathlon)
- Kevin Keegan (soccer)
- Alan Hinkes (mountaineer)
- David Hockney (artist)
- Joe Cocker (musician)
- Def Leppard (band; they have the keys to Sheffield)
- Judi Dench (actor)
- Ben Kindsley (actor)
- Patrick Stewart (Starfleet captain)
- Michael Palin (Monty Python)
(Christopher Eccleston, aka the 9th Doctor, is from Lancashire, and not from Yorkshire. However, his immortal line, "Lots of planets have a North", remains true.)
