It's only the first day, and already several medals have been awarded. Reigning champion Mariel Zagunis brought the USA its first gold medal of 2008 by defeating Sada Jacobson, also of the USA, in the Women's Individual Sabre. Becca Ward defeated Russian Sofiya Velikaya for the Bronze, giving the States a sweep of this event.

Before the fencing medals were awarded, the Americans had been shut out of Olympic medals completely, trailing the likes of Cuba, North Korea, Taiwan and Uzbekistan in the overall standings. Now, the U.S. is the only country with three medals.
From zero medals to three in the course of a single morning- well played, ladies.
