Bangladesh will start off their tour of Zimbabwe with the one-off Test match that will be played at the Harare Sports Club in Harare. This will be Zimbabwe’s first Test match since giving up on playing the longer format of the game in 2005. The self-imposed exile had been necessitated by the plunge in the quality of cricket due to the mass-retirements of some of the biggest names in English cricket. Lot has changed in the African country with host of former greats administering the game. Most of things look hunky-dory and Zimbabwe on its return to test cricket will face their rivals Bangladesh first up.
Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan has already proclaimed that they will be favourites to win the game, but he will know well to be wary of the conditions and the pitches there. The extra bounce will make it difficult for the Bangladeshi batsmen, as they would have found in the tour game. Bangladesh were bowled out for 188 and 147 in the two innings of that match against the Zimbabwean XI. Bangladesh have played in 68 Test matches in their career, and have won only three of the games. Two of those came against a third-string West Indian side and the third was against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe have beaten them thrice, but that was in the early part of Bangladesh’s entry into Test cricket. Bangladesh will miss two of the senior-most Test match bowlers, Mashrafe Mortaza and Shahdahat Hossain, a duo who would have been handy on the Harare surface. Rubel Hossain and Shafiul Islam will be the ones replacing them in the eleven.
For both the teams, it is the battle in pursuit of avoiding the last spot in the ICC rankings. In the build up to their readmission in test cricket, Zimbabwe have gone through the grind of playing against strong A teams of South Africa and Australia. And, the Brendan Taylor led side, who has anointed as skipper after Elton Chigumbura resigned from the post, look a well oiled side to brace their first challenge. Chigumbura will continue to be a part of the side as an all-rounder down the order. Tatenda Taibu comes back into the side after an injury had kept him out, while the Test could see the debut of Brian Vitori, a left-arm fast bowler. Hamilton Masakadza also makes a comeback into the side, after he had been controversially dropped from the World Cup squad. He should be the player to watch out for.
