ST. PETERSBURG - Wal-Mart has a difficult road ahead if it decides
to pursue plans to build a 150,000-square-foot supercenter near the
Brighton Bay neighborhood off Gandy Boulevard.
Because the retail corporation's site plan was rejected Wednesday
by the Environmental Development Commission, it would take a
supermajority of the City Council - six of eight members - to overturn
the ruling.
ST. PETERSBURG - Brighton Bay residents must gear up for another battle
if they want to block the construction of a Wal-Mart supercenter in
their northeast neighborhood.
Wal-Mart is the nation's largest private employer and real estate
developer; reportedly 82 percent of American households shopped there in 2003. In late 2004, it currently faced the largest employment discrminiation suit ever filed. Last November, two TV shows -- PBS Frontline and CNBC -- examined the company's impact on US culture and our economy.
