'State of War' in Eastern Congo as Army splits
There's a deep history here of tribal- and community-based animosity, which I have yet to study in great detail. Basically, a general in the Congolese army has gathered those loyal to him and declared war on the rest of the army. Such a schism could return the nation to a state of civil war, a mere eight months after the ceasefire.
A dissident Congolese army officer says there is a state of war between the government and his forces in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo.Speaking to the BBC, General Laurent Nkunda, a Congolese Tutsi, accused the government of forming an alliance with Hutus to attack his troops.
Heavy fighting is reported in the Kivu region, with the Congolese army moving troops into the area.
The UN refugee agency says tens of thousands have fled from their homes.
The UNHCR says people are afraid of being caught between government forces, former Rwandan rebels and troops of General Nkunda.
The word is
rife that Rwanda may have already sent her troops back into the DR
Congo, reports that she, however, strongly denies. But this does little
to dispel the fears that all out war could break out between DR Congo
government forces and Tutsi rebels supported by Rwandese forces in the
northeastern province of Nord Kivu.Kinshasa has called off operations against an extremist Hutu militia
accused of leading the 1994 Rwandan genocide, sparking protests from
Gen. Laurent Nkunda, who leads a Congolese Tutsi armed group in Nord
Kivu. The Rwandan government has also protested.Reports that Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) troops are inside eastern
DR Congo have been lent some element of credibility by comments of
relief workers, Congolese refugees and a senior UPDF military official,
all of whom requested not to be named because of the sensitivity of the
claim. It is claimed that on August 18 the Rwandese forces allegedly crossed the border.
"RDF brigade 408 under Brigadier Mulokole has joined with Gen.
Nkunda rebels and we fear that there is war impending," the UPDF
officer told Sunday Monitor.
As is always the case, innocent people are now caught in the middle. The three main groups involve seem to be Nkunda's loyalists, the standing Congolese army, and the recently-decommissioned "mixed brigades" rebel fighters co-opted into the Congolese army as part of a peace deal.

among former-Tutsi rebels integrated into Democratic Republic of
Congo's army threatens to shatter an 8-month ceasefire and plunge the
country's troubled east back into war.
On Thursday, troops loyal to renegade General Laurent Nkunda, who
led a 2004 uprising in the volatile North Kivu province to defend his
Tutsi people, began abandoning their positions without the blessing of
military top brass.
The troop movements have sown confusion over the fate of five mixed
brigades involving Nkunda's soldiers created under a January truce
brokered by neighbouring Rwanda.[/q]

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff.
There is also a deep history of people wanting to exploit the resources there. Canada being one connected to the recent genocide. The Tantalum that is used in every cell phone and computer is worth its weight in gold.

This corpratist company basede in Canada has been doing some very dirty deals. I wont go into it here but I think the reason is that all the Legit Tantalum in Canada has been taken by the US for the new Fighter plane they are building, causing a world wide shortage of the stuff.
