Before coming to Chicken I read in a guidebook that "There are no chickens in Chicken." Let me tell you now that the guidebook is dead wrong. There are exactly two chickens in Chicken, or perhaps I should say 1.9 chickens. They both are nameless, so I shall call the white chicken Ivory and the black chicken Ebony.

Ivory is a rooster, but he has lost his comb to frostbite. Ebony is a hen, and last winter when it was -60 F, her feet and lower legs froze and fell off. She is a brave and determined little bird and still gets about, crawling on her wings and drumsticks. That's why I say 1.9 chickens. These share their pen, between the Chicken Creek Restaurant and the Saloon, with a duck who thinks he's a chicken. The duck was too shy to pose for my picture.
