100+ Cyclists Block Traffic Near Leicester Square Friday Night
Fun turned to frustration as dozens of cyclists created a scene near Leicester Square Tube Station at around 6.30pm Friday 26th September.
Pedestrians waited to cross as a stream of cyclists went by, and when the traffic lights turned, black taxis and other vehicles were blocked by some of the cyclists who stopped infront of the vehicles to let the stream of cyclists continue.
Several red and green traffic lights later a police car showed up and got the cyclists to move, in one instance with a physical shove.
The cyclists went on but the lights had reverted to red so the car jam waited yet again, and when their lights went green, more cyclists from the steady stream stopped to purposely block the traffic again.
A few angry exchanges from the Taxi drivers with the cyclists talking about 'we pay for these roads' from the drivers and 'now you know how it feels when you keep hogging the roads' from the cyclists.
The police seemed to have little more power than to beckon the cyclists 'back on yer back'.
The picture attached shows the scene, with a green light, cyclist blockage, and police car.
The flow of cycles slowed down after 10 minutes and the traffic was finally able to move again.

This source comes from the London Critical Mass website: "No cycle police presence at all this time! Some confrontations with drivers and pedestrians. A taxi deliberately damaged a bike. Perfect weather and about 500 riders or maybe more."
Normally, there are about several cycle police officers at Critical Mass events to help ease aggression between motorists and cyclist. Why cycle police weren't around at the time, needs to be taken up with the Metropolitan police.

The cycle police, if they are there, normally help control things at traffic lights and roundabouts etc.

Further a member of the Critical Mass website says: "Why the police didn't turn up for what was a highly successful ride remains a mystery. Was this to do with the impending House of Lords appeal against the police on 20th October or was it some kind of an experiment to see if those 'leaderless anarchists' on bicycles would run amok without police supervision and cause traffic chaos or even worse?"
I will contact the Metropolitan Police and find out why the event wasn't manned.

GavrielShaw, I like this story. It's good stuff. Nicely written from 'other side'.
