Fearing their children will be targeted by pedophile, many parents have kept them away from school.

ALMOST 60 students of Queensland's Carbrook and Mt Cotton primary schools stayed home yesterday because their parents were worried they would be targeted by pedophile Dennis Ferguson.

One in every six children at Carbrook failed to attend on the first day back after the mid-year holidays.

Cornubia mother Jo Hyslop said she kept her eight-year-old daughter at home because she wanted to know she was safe and was happy she was not alone.

"I think it sends a strong message to politicians that nobody wants him (Ferguson) in our community. This is not the right area for him," she said.

Dennis Ferguson is an Australian child sex offender who in 1987 kidnapped three children from their home and raped them over a period of three days. Later, one of the children became suicidal and all required long-term counselling. He was convicted of kidnapping, sodomy, gross indecency, indecent dealing and carnal knowledge the following year. In 1989, the Brisbane Supreme Court sentenced Ferguson to 14 years in jail, saying that his chance of rehabilitation was 'nil'

Now no one wants "The Notorius Pedophile" in their community. It was a difficult situation for the authorities, cause he has to live somewhere.

AUTHORITIES have asked residents not to run convicted pedophile Dennis Ferguson out of another house after he was relocated southeast of Brisbane.

The Queensland Government admits it has nowhere else to send the serial offender.

Ferguson last night was holed up on a rural property at Carbrook, 35km southeast of Brisbane, as the Government revealed it would spend $1000 a day to support his transition from prisoner to a life back in the community.
