NP Rank:
5 Legged Puppy, Lily, Saved from Coney Island Freak Show
Lily, a six-week-old Chihuahua-terrier mix was born with an unusual birth defect; she has five legs, the fifth one in between her back legs. Lily, originally named Precious, was going to become the latest attraction at the Coney Island Freak Show, when her owner, Calvin Owensby, was going to sell her for $3,000 as he needed the money and lost his job last December.
However, Allyson Siegel from Charlotte, North Carolina, saw this puppy's story and couldn't let this happen. She paid Calvin Owensby $4,000 for Lily and has now taken her home.
When Siegel heard about the dog's possible future, she jumped into action. "I saw her and she's so adorable and I felt like I needed to be an advocate for her because she can't speak," she told the Daily News. "It just broke my heart ... I needed to see if there was something I could do."
Allyson insists that Lily is like any other young puppy however.
"She is beautiful, she's not a freak, she's a normal little puppy dog and she should be just like all the others," said Siegel. "I just knew I wanted to get the puppy and make sure she had a good life."
Lily will have her extra leg removed in two weeks, at a cost of $2,000 but Allyson wants to have it done.
Lily is otherwise a healthy dog.
Animal activists were outraged when they heard the story of Lily's intended fate, but this story at least has a happy ending.

I like happy endings for dogs.
