PEOPLE who sell goods on eBay and other internet sites are being warned not to include their address in the advertisement - or risk offloading items for a lot less than expected.

A police investigation in Canberra has revealed goods are being stolen after being listed for sale on the internet.

Detective Sergeant Dave Harrison of the territory investigations group said providing details other than a phone number posted on the online auction sites effectively tells thieves where to find the goods they want.

"Thieves can click on a website and find a particular vehicle they like and pinpoint the location where they can find it," he said.

A number of trail bikes have been stolen from Canberra garages in recent weeks after sellers listed their home address in the online advertisements.
