NP Rank:
Another Meteorite?
Saskatchewan, home of fireballs? We already have plenty of crop circles, now two space fire balls less than a month apart!
From Saskatoon Homepage:
Could it have been another meteor? We have recieved numerous calls this morning from people who live around Biggar, Invermay, Shell Lake, North Battleford and Sonningdale, or were travelling in the Humboldt area, southeast of Saskatoon. Most say around 5:30, quarter to 6 they saw a blue light streak through the sky. Nothing has been confirmed at this point as to what it may have been. |
I'll keep you posted as news comes in, watch for updates!

I saw something that looked like a meteor, out my west window at Aberdeen, SK at 5:48 this morning. It was not as large as the one one west toward Unity but it looked similar. From what I could see it was in a south south east direction. Hard to tell the angle it was coming in at, but it wasn't a great angle.

| Yesterday's Blue Streak, Still a Mystery |
| SUNDAY, 07 DECEMBER 2008 | |
That bright blue streak in our sky early yesterday morning could have been a meteor. Stan Shadick with the U of S Astronomy Department says if the sky was clear it could have been another meteor. He has not yet heard from any other officials any reports of the incident. There were reports of a bright blue light in the sky, that looked like lightening, for just a second that came in from Humboldt, through Saskatoon, Biggar and up to the Battlefords around quarter to 6 yesterday morning. |

It is likely a new fireball. However, it is not at all strange to have 'so many'. There is a fireball reported in Sask on the average every two weeks. (The whole world experiences the same thing - we're not special. As a matter of fact, there was very bright fireball reported from Colorado on the same day.) The issue is that you have to be at the right place at the right time for that few seconds to see it. Your reports are valuable to us because they trigger our searching of data off of our prairie network of fireball cameras, dedicated to getting these things on tape. It was that network that provided the data to find the meteorites S of Lloydminster. If you can provide some positional information (directions in the sky), the please fill out the report form found at:

Thanks rick, I didn't personally see them but will keep it in mind in future if I do. I just shared the news from local news releases. Interest seems to have faded now though.

Probably get more reports of meteor sitings in the prairies because the sky is so much bigger out there... more cloudless nights helps too. All of the trees and clouds out east around my house, I can only see the sky from 45 degrees and above... that cuts out most of the possible sky attractions except for those that are about to fall directly on my house...

Earth satellite debris is most likely when the angle is shallow.

At about 5:33pm PST on 1/18/09 I was walking my dogs in Covina California and was looking up to the skys in a NNE direction. The sun had just set, but the sky was still light. I saw what may have been a meteorite travelling from west to east, like a 4th of July sparkler, across about 15 degrees of the sky. Pretty impressive!

Watched it glowing around 8:20ish over the skys of OC - followed from the 91 to the 15 out to the 60 freeway and before Rubidoux it started changing glowing colors ...red blue white with a blinking light on top. I called the San Bernardino Police to see if anyone else had reported it and they said they had a call from a local station inquiring and a couple other calls.... It was BIG and when it started turning colors I turned around and went home to see If there was anything on TV. Nothing!!! Orange PD also had calls come in reporting something Strange in the sky~ If anyone gets info, I am sooooo interested in finding out what it was! Even if it was a blimp it was Freaky~
