Ashley Payne was a teacher at Appalachee High in Barrow County Georgia up until a short while ago, but claims she was fired after some pictures of her on Facebook drinking and an expletive were shown to her superiors.

The Barrow County school district claimed that Ashley had to go because her profile page had pictures of her with beer mugs and wine glasses from her European vacation.

“I visited the Guinness Brewery, I went to Italy and had wine. I went to the Temple Bar District of Dublin and drank some alcohol there like any normal adult would,” said Payne.

Ashley is claiming that the Barrow Country School District violated her rights because she was told she was not entitled to a hearing, but she does have the rights to a hearing.

The pictures in question show Ashley with glasses of alcohol, but not looking intoxicated.

“They’re not even of me drinking the drinks and I don’t look like I’m intoxicated in any way or doing anything provocative or inappropriate,” Payne said.

She was called in to the principal's office and told that she should resign.

Her facebook page is private and she has no students on there, but she does have some work colleagues. Some other teachers were on the European trip though and no one else has lost their job.

“I did not think that any of this could jeopardize my job because I was just doing what adults do and have drinks on vacation and being responsible about it,” said Payne.

The Barrow County School Superintendent Ron Saunders has declined to comment.

I'm sure glad I live in the northwest and nowhere near the south.

You are so correct.  I am ashamed to state that I live in the south sometimes.  I can't believe this story.  Incredible.

Many people dismiss teacher's unions as self-serving groups.  Then you see stuff like this and realize just how remarkably amateur administrators and school boards can be.  That's why teachers need unions -- to protect themselves against ignorant behavior like this.

No doubt a good upstanding christian moron, or group on good upstanding christian morons are behind the removal of this educator.  Keep it up christians.  "By their fruits you will know them," I believe that was written in that hideous collection of used toilet tissue.  That quote applies to your bigoted  behavior as well. My apology: I mistyped this sentence: No doubt a good upstanding christian moron, or group on good upstanding christian morons are behind the removal of this educator. My intended sentence: No doubt a good upstanding christian moron, or group of good upstanding christian morons are behind the removal of this educator. I sincerely apologize for my mistaken typing.

You are a bigot.  You hate Christians and your hatred defines you.  Being a moron is non-denominational... You are an excellent case in point.  Just for jollies... consider the lunacy found in the secular "federal government"... plenty of fools to go around.

I'm a Christian and I also think that the firing of this teacher is ridiculous.  Your comments are both baseless and offensive.

Nobody cares if you're a Christian.

GA teacher

I teach in a neighboring county and this has got my attention enough to delete people I work with and untag any pictures that couls be portrayed as inappropriate.  Apparently a student "tattled" but she wasn't firends with any students so not sure how they got to it...Anyhow, here's a story with more info about it from the Athens, GA paper.onlineathens.com/stories/111409/new_516320164.shtml

I'm sorry for you that you would have to go to these measures to prevent anything negative being thrown at you by our school systems in GA.  I live in Athens also, taught for 12 years part of which was in the GA school systems, and I am disgusted with Barrow County School Districts actions against this educator.  Damn Just Can't believe what they have done.  Stupid!!!!!!!!!!

just so you know if you are friends with someone and have your picture open to public you cannot search for the persons pictures but say one of her colleagues commented on a picture or she posted them and then posted a note on her wall that she posted them well that note could come up on a co-workers page who DOES have a student as a friend and that student could then see the picture themselves. She would have had to have them as private to just herself or just her friends. Also she may have been logged into facebook on a community computer or even on her own computer at school and a student might have seen them that way too.

Honey, How are you a teacher and you can not spell.  Go back to college.

oops....got, not has got....

This is a shame and a disgrace. First of all she had no students as her friend on Facebook which means no student could have seen any of these pictures. The onwithly way a student or parent could have sen anything on her Facebook would be if a fellow teacher who was her freind on facebook showed it to them. In which case the teacher who did this should have been reprimanded for causing this whole situation. Furthermore a person's Facebook should be considered private domain and anything therein should be exempt from any public scrutiny such as this unless there were evidence of illegal activities which in this case there certainly were not. Hopefully justice will prevail and she will get her job back or at the very least be compensated for the damage to her name as a result of all this.

I've got a brilliant idea- lets regulate our lives and/or sanitize or edit our public social websites- it will be like an R-rated film that has been edited for regular tv. Don't people have their own lives? Probably someone who is envious that the young lady got to so somewhere and actually do something. If I were a teacher, I would make my social pages "private" only, because somewhere, someone in the public eye will get offended about something....the nation of the offended! Are you serious? IF she had photos of kissing someone would they have her quit because she might be sexually active too ( and oh my gosh- shes single!!!) Someone call out the firing squad- holy smokes...wheres the advil? I am getting a headache. Apparently SOMEBODY has nothing better to do than peruse the social pages of their childrens teachers. Creepy!  Probably some ultra- religious soggy breasted, cow stomach, who thinks all the world is going to burn in hell because we don't live by HER standards. I hope the teacher gets an apology and a multi-million dollar settlement. How dare these people think that they can regulate other peoples lives!!!

Get some books on anger management... try to find ones with lots of pictures and small words...

really?

you really should get a life. Not all christian minded people are evil. YOU however are not really sounding so great yourself with all the hatred you seem to have inside of YOU for an entire group of people. Obviously you have issues you need to deal with but saying the things you do about every christian when it was never established that it was a christian to begin with who got the teacher fired is kinda ridiculous. Needless to say the issue is within yourself and really you should work it out because it isnt good to hold so much hatred inside yourself.

Try to find some books on anger management... Look for ones with lots of pretty pictures and small words you can understand.

Big brother government at it's finest. Just imagine how the health care things will go....Imagine..(and it's not hard to imagine that is it?)...checking your internet usage...pages...visits."you say you don't smoke....but we see you visited online at Bob's cigar shop""you say you don't drink....but we see you looked up recipes for mojitos""you say you ....you say.... you say...."

Just for your information, I have an education, and am a practicing RN. I also have an opinion and if you don't like what you read, then you have the option of finding another website or other. You do not have the right to tell others that what they feel is of no significance. THAT is your opinion, and in such a case, can be taken with a grain of salt. What is the point of expressing ones thoughts? Its to hopefully stimulate an exchange of intellectual quality, maybe even enlightenment. How would you remedy the situation?  In your opinion, I suppose we should just walk around with our mouths hanging open, saliva dripping from the corners of our mouths, with knuckles scraping the ground, and ignore the situation. After all, it will go away on its own, like your rights to express how you think/feel.

Curious Me

She is a legal adult having a drink and that gets her fired? What's next?  Pregnant teachers, married or not, getting fired because the kids might find out she has sex?
