Referring to Knut, the polar bear. He was stressed. Zoos are for people, not wild animals.

BERLIN — Germany's celebrity polar bear Knut died from drowning after collapsing due to swelling of his brain and falling into his enclosure's pool, an expert said Friday.

Pathologist Claudia Szentiks said a necropsy of the four-year-old bear who died suddenly two weeks ago showed he was suffering from encephalitis, an irritation and swelling of the brain that was likely brought on by an infection.

She said it was unclear specifically what caused the brain swelling, but that experts had ruled out rabies, botulism and bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease.

Szentiks also rejected allegations from animal-rights groups that he was traumatized by living in a zoo environment, saying that there were no indications of any chronic stress.”

Living in a zoo environment is the only choice for many animals, polar bears are endangered, as are many other animals in zoos. Knut was born in captivity, you cant just release a bear born in captivity into the wilds, Knut's mother rejected him, so he had to be hand bred otherwise he would most likely have died. How possibly could this bear not have been kept in captivity? Knut clearly wasnt under chronic stress. Zoos in the developed world work around captive breeding programs with the aim of breeding endangered species, however some animals are in zoos because they had to be brought in to protect them from humans outside the zoo and sometimes other animals. Knut's mother was called Tosca, Tosca was a circus performer, now that is something animals rights groups should be putting energy into, circuses with animals is a bad plan. Humans are cruel animals, zoos which work ethically such as the ones run by the Royal Zoological Society work to protect species, ethical zoos protect and conserve, they hold animals that have been brought in because their lives were in danger, I've heard people say without thinking "That bear shouldnt be in a cage", they are in cages because their lives are in danger outside of the zoos. There's no way you can put a new born bear that has been rejected by its mother into "Its natural environment", it would be killed either by other bears or by humans, Knut had to be fed and kept warm and there was no mother to do this, since his keeper was so dedicated the bear could survive until this unfortunate moment.
