I stumbled onto this story by accident (no really!!!) and even though it is a bit of old news, I thought it was worth sharing on here.

Being the responsible lot that we are, Crave occasionally posts public service announcements for the benefit of our readers. So here's one for those of you who use cannabis for medicinal purposes only, of course.

The appropriately named "Volcano Vaporizer" is a device that can make your prescription up to four times more potent than the average dosage. The German-made "BMW of bongs," as Uncrate calls it, also helps purify the substance and minimize the accompanying odor. But the Volcano's $540 price tag could be prohibitive--unless you have the most liberal of health insurance.

Can you imagine a dorm room not smelling like a dorm room ?

Well, on now to the science of the device from the Horses Mouth :

The Volcano vaporization system releases flavor and active ingredients from plant material through vaporisation by hot air. With the vaporisation technique hot air passes through the plants. During this process the flavoring and active ingredients will be set free through controlled temperature 130°C (266°F) to 230°C (446°F). Due to the specific vaporisation temperature of the plant material the ingredients are released into the air and can subsequently be inhaled.

Smoking or incensing releases ingredients through heat but the temperature is reached through combustion which has several disadvantages. Smoking involves the combustion, incensing the carbonization of plant material, followed by the unavoidable inhalation of toxic combustion by-products, which cause irritation of the respiratory tract as well as noxious odors. In addition, the high and uncontrolled combustion temperature causes the unnecessary destruction of the majority of the ingredients, squandering the original material without any effect.

Vaporizing does the opposite, the ingredients are released in a gentle way and therefore you enjoy both health benefits as well as economic benefits. The plant material doesn't get burned and hence it is possible to vaporize the contents of the filling chamber several times until all the aroma and ingredients are completely dissolved.

I can see Science labs all around the country ordering one of these... for real science uses...of course....

Wikipedia offers some good information on vaporizers here

That's awesome. Actually, a shop in Vancouver had a vaporizer in the back, which was in near-constant use. Funny enough, they got shut down.

When I was in high school, a guy in my year built one using items found in a hardware store. The thing was very McGuyver.

He would make a fortune if he sold plans for his deign on the internet for $20 a pop !! better than the $500+ of the Volcano

For sure... and this was back in 1992. His version was not nearly as design, conscious, though, but I remember the on/off switch lit up.

There's a documentary out now called "Super High Me" where they use this vaporizer with breakfast.

I think the original plans that Jordan remembers so fondly are still in my possession.  With a little creativity for the outside case, maybe a few more lights, and less hardware store / more scavenge, the whole project could be built for well less than the lint in my pocket.  Of course test material, to ensure the integrity of the closed system, is going to cost you something,... unless you have some really cool friends.

I see a MAKE article here someplace.... especially if it has a few more things that light up like the on/off switch.
