A US dentist who masterminded a scheme to steal body parts from hundreds of corpses has been sentenced to between 18 and 54 years in prison.

Michael Mastromarino, 44, admitted leading a $4.6 million operation that stole the body parts from funeral homes for sale to transplant operations.

In March, Mastromarino pleaded guilty to charges of body stealing, reckless endangerment and enterprise corruption, and in June he apologised for the anguish he caused.

The ring stole body parts from funeral homes in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, between 2001 and 2005.
