NP Rank:
Bonny Eagle High School Student Denied Diploma for Blowing a Kiss
Justin Denney, a student at Bonny Eagle High School student in Maine, was denied his diploma at a graduation ceremony on June 12th, for "fooling around" after his name was called.
His alleged infraction? Denney simply took a bow, blew a kiss to his family, and pointed to his friends as he got up on stage to receive his high school diploma.
The school's Superintendent Suzanne Lukas ordered Justin Denney to return to his seat and then refused him his diploma to graduate.
Both Denney and his mother Mary Denney are livid — and refuse to accept the school's claim that Denney misbehaved.
Justin Denney was graduating from Bonny Eagle High School June 12 and had gotten up on stage to receive his diploma when he gestured to his friends and relatives.
School Superintendent Suzanne Lukas abruptly told Denney to return to his seat, according to WMTW TV in Maine. He didn't get his diploma.
His mother, Mary Denney, is livid. Her son told her that the superintendent warned, "There's no fooling around up here."
"He just kind of looked at her because he wasn't fooling around. He didn't consider that fooling around or misbehaving in any sense of the word," Mary Denney told WMTW.
Lukas reportedly asked the soon-to-be graduate why he thought he deserved a diploma.
"He goes, 'Because I worked hard and I earned it,' and she goes, 'No, go take your seat,'" his mother told the station.
Other students also walked away empty-handed because of various disruptions during the ceremony. Some started playing with beach balls and others were separated from their friends, according to WMTW.

I know this superintendent. She is a control freak. She is the same person who fired a really great art teacher for just as pathetic a reason as she denied Justin his diploma. Knowing the school board, many of them are just as bad, and they'll support her.

Suzanne Lukas caused problems when she was a member of Kennebunk’s school system. I personally have witnessed some of her blatantly rude and outlandish comments towards students and in my opinion she should either be forced to resign or be relieved. As a former student of Kennebunk High School and personally have seen her actions and her disregard for rules set forth I think it is a simple action when talking about having her relieved. I think the embarrassed that those students suffering is proof enough that she has been allowed to get away with way to much as it is.

Most of you don't know the whole story. The "blowing a kiss" was the least of it. Bonny Eagle High School has had a number of stunts pulled at graduations in recent years. And every year the next graduating class tried to outdo the last one. There was a huge consensus that it had gotten out of hand. All of these students signed agreements that they would not (1) wear anything but their official graduation regalia (the competition to put stupid shit on their caps and gowns, and the curious practice of adding fake scarfs and ribbons made graduation look foolish), (2) would walk across the stage in a dignified manner and not ham it up (a student took out a can of silly string and sprayed it in the face of the principle a while back), and (3) would not throw balloons balls, eggs, or anything else around the floor during the procession.
So, what does this class do? Being typical teenagers (I know, I was one once) they tried to push the boundaries. The tried disrupting the event, they blew up various things and threw them around, they got in shouting matches with security... very nice.
What did Justin Denney do? He wore a fake "track ribbon" around his neck but hid it until he was on stage (why else would he hide it unless he KNEW that he wasn't supposed to wear it?), taking it off in an elaborate and flamboyant matter, he then bowed to the cheers of his teen aged friends and blew them all a kiss.
He was horsing around. He hid his "ribbon" until the last minute and took it out with a huge smirk on his face. He bowed and blew a kiss to the crowd. He KNEW he wasn't supposed to do it, but he did it anyway.
And how did the "adults" respond? Instead of supporting the other adults in their effort to ensure a dignified graduation, they stormed the stage and threatened the superintendent right after the ceremony was over. They formed protest groups and threatened to sue. They made tee shirts idolizing this child.
What kind of less did this child learn? That you can be a show off and get away with it. That you can try to show up authority and you get a tee shirt with your name on it. That the rules don't apply to you.
Good luck with the rest of your life kid. I'm sure every other area of society will be just as tolerant. I'm sure you'll be able to blow a kiss to your boss or drill sergeant or state trooper who may pull you over for speeding or a busted tail light.

Well, this is just the stupidest thing I have ever seen. I used to teach high school and am now committed to home schooling my own child because of ridiculous things such as this. Schools are no longer institutions of education but rapidly becoming places where we teach kids not how to think but how to obey insanely draconian rules. Please understand, I am entirely in favor of rules about gang-related behavior and violence. But not letting kids celebrate at graduation? What kind of society are we trying to build? I guess free thinking is bad...only robotic rule following seems to be allowed. (This is not to mention the whole issue of teaching strictly to state and federal test standards, which also renders any idea of learning to think null and void.) I once was told during a teacher evaluation that while a lot of my teaching was great and I had great rapport with students, my voice was too low. Also, I needed to dress more fancily...on a teacher's salary. As long as schools remain committed to NONeducation and just molding kids into drones, I firmly believe we will continue to see drops in both graduates' ability to think and in the number of intelligent teachers who can remain on the job for more than a few short years. I fully support this mother and her son and hope someone with a modicum of sense allows this child his diploma.

It is purely a sensationalized headline, no irony or poetic justice. The student was flaunting some fake honor cords made by his MOM, not authorized or given to him by the school. Did you seriously think the diploma was denied for blowing a kiss to his mom? And the diploma was not denied, just the formal presentation at the ceremony. But the student refused to pick his diploma up at the school. The student then kept saying he had no diploma for over a week, while giving multiple interviews. Did you know the code stated that if a student did not get his diploma at the ceremony, it was to be picked up at the school the following Monday? The only humiliation is of the student by himself and his parents. Oh and there is signicant amounts of humiliation on those who got punk'd by Justin Denney and his family. It appears you are also a victim of Justin Denney. The majority of the people are still behind the superintendent because the majority know all the facts involved. Did you know that part of the reason for the required decorum was because the school was also announcing the awardees of over a $100,000 of scholarships at this time. And that none of the students or parents knew of the awards until this moment. Did you also know the code of conduct did include when celebration could be done by all as a class?
