Bonny Eagle High School Student Denied Diploma for Blowing a Kiss

Justin Denney, a student at Bonny Eagle High School student in Maine, was denied his diploma at a graduation ceremony on June 12th, for "fooling around" after his name was called.

His alleged infraction? Denney simply took a bow, blew a kiss to his family, and pointed to his friends as he got up on stage to receive his high school diploma.

The school's Superintendent Suzanne Lukas ordered Justin Denney to return to his seat and then refused him his diploma to graduate.

Both Denney and his mother Mary Denney are livid — and refuse to accept the school's claim that Denney misbehaved.

Justin Denney was graduating from Bonny Eagle High School June 12 and had gotten up on stage to receive his diploma when he gestured to his friends and relatives.

School Superintendent Suzanne Lukas abruptly told Denney to return to his seat, according to WMTW TV in Maine. He didn't get his diploma.

His mother, Mary Denney, is livid. Her son told her that the superintendent warned, "There's no fooling around up here."

"He just kind of looked at her because he wasn't fooling around. He didn't consider that fooling around or misbehaving in any sense of the word," Mary Denney told WMTW.

Lukas reportedly asked the soon-to-be graduate why he thought he deserved a diploma.

"He goes, 'Because I worked hard and I earned it,' and she goes, 'No, go take your seat,'" his mother told the station.

Other students also walked away empty-handed because of various disruptions during the ceremony. Some started playing with beach balls and others were separated from their friends, according to WMTW.

That superintendant sould be fired. Unless the kids were doing something to hurt someone else let them be. They have accomplished something that is a benchmark in their lives and if you expect them to be drones then it is a sad world we live in. I have 2 children and I want them to be excited when they graduate I know I will be. The problem we have today is that there are too many uptight people in this world and if you cant have a little fun when you are excited then just give up.  I hope that kid goes to college or starts his own business or whatever he does is a success and in ten years can look back and laugh at the ignorance of this so called administrator. If it were my child I would have stopped the whole ceremony and made a disruption that would have been worth it. Go on kid be successful and happy and that woman is probably just a miserable person anyway

I’m 54 years old and I can’t even find the words to say on how incredibly stupid this is. Suzanne Lukas should be terminated immediately. Where has common sense gone? Yes I could go on…

Names, contact numbers, and addresses of the board members. I don't suggest personal letters, and do NOT go by these folks homes. However, blow up their phones and email the city website left and right. Be respectful. Respect tends to speak louder than anger. If this continues with no movement, then it may be time to start shouting a little louder. If the board does nothing, take it to the state supreme court if you have to.

I can't believe schools today...This is another fine example of how screwed up the American education system is today. I'm so tired of these "Bootjack" social  twats' running the schools. Get over yourselves, teachers, superintendents..etc. How about focus on how the kids are performing instead of their joyus celebration of putting up with your Social B.S! Mrs Lukas..." Take your job a shove it up your tight ass".

What next? The Dean or the Principal and the Faculty are idiots.

A Kiss is a gesture of Love and Happiness. How dare this school demise this student the way they did.

I am outraged

SUSAN LUKAS IS AN ASS! I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN, CORPORATE EXECUTIVE BUSINESS OWNER SEMI RETIRED-ADDITIONALLY I'VE WORKED WITH YOUNGSTERS-WITH THIS IN MIND I WOULD POSIT THIS FOR MZ. LUKAS':EXACTLY BUT SPECIFICALLY WHAT SIGNAL DO YOU BELIEVE THIS SENDS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS-ARE YOU SO INCOMPETANT AS TO MISS THE POINT ONCE A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE HE/SHE IS AN ADULT AND YOUR EQUAL- DO YOU TREAT ALL ADULTS WITH SUCH DISRESPECT? THAT'S CORRECT, WE HONOR  GRADUATES ENCOURAGING THEM TO GO FORTH AS ADULT-OR DOES YOUR HIGH SCHOOL NOT PREPARE YOUR STUDENTS FOR THIS?

I feel that the school did over react, i'm 36 but im not to old to remember how excited I was to graduate. In my opinion, the school should be happy that he blew a kiss to his family instead of pulling one of the many horrifying stunts that have been pulled at other schools. Dont punish children for being excited.

I am shocked but not surprised that a Superintendant would do this.  When l read the headlines l thought that maybe this kid had physically kissed someone at a prom or somthing, not that he had actually blown his mother a kiss from the stage.  He did not throw a beach ball. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way in which this young man conducted himself.  If anyone out there remembers the movie "A Scent of a Woman"  well this young man can be proud of himself for loving his mother he does not have to prove to anyone that he is proud to be a Bonny Eagle man.  He knows how much work he put into working for his diploma and maybe he should not have to have anything on it that relates to this school.  On the other hand maybe common sense will prevail and the over zealous Suzanne Lukas will apologise and give this young man what he truely deserves.....his High School Diploma.

aint no words to express how stupid this is

1. how bowing and blowing a kiss misbehavoir at every graduation ceremony you see kids do a dance or whatever to show how happy they is.

2. why give him a cap and gown if you going to take away his gradution priveledges during the ceremony.

3.don't the principal look at the kids grades before letting them graduate? he probably did worked hard and her stupid ass took away his priveledges

This is an outrage.  No wonder today's young adults act the way they do.  Look at the examples they have to follow.

This school administrator should be dismissed immediately.  Graduation is for the student not the school administration.  Let these kids have fun!  It's their day and it only comes once.  If this administrator expects to keep up with today's teens then he needs to get on the ball and get with the times.

Considering all the different things that administrators are passive towards, this is just ridiculous!  First of all, I would never, EVER in all my life think that something like that would tick off a bunch of people, nonetheless prevent a kid from graduating.  That is just cheating the kid off of 4 years of hard work!

And in our society, blowing a kiss is such a passive gesture that I'm sure people from all over do that or worse at their graduation.  Just a few weeks ago I was at a high school graduation and I promise that some kids were, by far, much worse.

I would totally press something against them!  I don't care how, but I think that everyone should get their diploma if they have had to endure 4 years of work, behaving, and keeping the grades up.  It is sickening to think that the 4 years of working towards the diploma was shattered by an act that probably only lasted a few seconds.  This really just makes their school board look like @$$ holes!

I AGREE with you!!! They did something like that to a kid my son was supose to graduate with, the kid was top of the class with his grade, taking college class while in high school. They took him out of line at graduation. I know it crushed him and his folks.  This is what our tax dollars are paying for. For the kids to be humiliated. Great JOB!  Looks like we are all living in RUSSIA these days.

I think graduation is the one time students should be excused from behaving so stand up... it is a time to celebrate and they should have the right to be excited and commended for finishing school.

I can't believe that our country has come to this dening a high school grad his diploma just because he blow his family a kiss. That is the stupedest thing I have ever heared.

What is wrong with this schoo and that lady, if you can all someone a lady for her actions, that is the most stupid story I ever read, apparentely, this woman have no ethic nor moral, maybe she grew up with no kisses or any symbolic affection....she needs to be fired from there and go as a head of a mental institution....you know how bad reputation that is for the school..   I hope the mother gets what she deserves, her son will get his diploma in his cap and gown, if it was me, I would made the school hold another ceremony with all the students all over again, that is so denegrating.......what a bitch.....BUT, what goes around, comes around and that is FOR SURE....

is this the educator who embasrrassed, during graduation,  a boy for blowing a kiss to his mom? pathetic.

0
Tony Langston

I simply can't belive this. Is this lady all right in the head? I mean I could understand if he did something really really bad but a kiss???  Geez if blowing a kiss to your mom is bad....then what has the world came to?

This is ridiculous. File a class action against that school. Is this still a free country or we live in communist right now. Give me a break. Ask the judge to explain what it really means "do not fool around". I guess most miss America were fooling around in front of all the tv audience. This is a big joke of the U.S.

Obviously the principal of that school is an emotionless being. I think all of this was blown out of proportion.

Is it a wonder why more and more parents are homeschooling their children in this day and age. I see nothing wrong with homeschooling.

I am not involved with the family in any way actually I live in West  Virginia. I happened to come across the news about the senior who was denied his diploma for blowing his family a kiss, and it caught my eye. I personally think you may have overreacted, even if the boy was acting silly or any of the things you may say. Kids are supposed to do this, especially on their graduation day. They are so excited from getting over all those years that they are just happy and goofy sometimes. Mrs. Lukas I’m sure when you were a kid that you may have acted up a little too, your punishment was too severe for the what the student did. Did you think about what you did may have some repercussions to it, Those students may try to sue you because you have destroyed such a happy time for them for such a small infraction. That would really be awful and embarrassing for those young students to have to remember their graduation that way and being humiliated in front of your family, fellow classmates, and so many other observers. I’m sure what do you did at the time you may have thought it was right, you wanted order at the graduation. I would bet that if you could take it back that you would, so maybe you should consider a formal apology to all the families affected by your overreactions.

According to the Kennebunk Post on Oct 24, 2008, the School Administrative District 6 (SAD6) in Maine, which oversees Bonny Eagle High School does not require its high school students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Yet the School Administrative District 6 has denied a high school diploma for a student who blew a kiss.

Clearly, the values of Superintendent Suzanne Lukas are in question.

Yes we are required now.

I am a sophomore at BEHS and ever since that article came out our school administrators have had a stick up their ass about everything. I was stopped in the hallway because I was not carrying my agenda book (you have to have it signed by your teacher to go anywhere) by none other than the cop who was at graduation.

I hate my school

Give me a break, no, give him a break have your forgotten that awesome feeling of adrenalin. God bless every child that has the chance to  graduate. We expect them to go face the world but wait you really don't have a say. Get over yourself. He graduated God bless him..Good Luck in your future plans. I pray my daughter has the chance to acknowledge this accomplishment!!!!!

Outraged Teacher

as an educator, i can't stand how ignorant administrators can bring down the perception of our entire field.  in response to a previous post about "those who can't teach", i'm offended.  however, rather than rant on about that, i wanted to let you in on a saying we have in our field: "those who can't teach, become administrators"

Mr. AV

Misbehavior is whatever the superintendent decides it is. It's not her fault the student didn't obey the rules. What's sad is that the student's mother is as ignorant as he is. You walk up, get your diploma, go back to your seat. How hard is it to do those three things? The graduation ceremony should be respected in the highest of dignity. That student showed no respect whatsoever to the people who gave him that education he claims to have worked hard for. Without them, he would have no education. He should've thought about that before deciding to desecrate the dedication and time those teachers poured into him.

Suzanne Lukas' significant other has now been heard from in the person of Mr. AV. Clueless ass.
