Boy bites pit bull to save his life.
I love dogs, but one of my biggest fears is when a big dog comes lunging at you. I have no idea what I would do if I was in the boy's position. I don't think I would bite the dog, but maybe try and shake it loose or punch it loose?
I'm sorry all you dog lovers, but the dog has been taken to the pound and may be killed.
An 11-year old boy is in Brazil's media spotlight after sinking his teeth into the neck of a dog that attacked him. Local newspapers reported on Thursday that Gabriel Almeida was playing in his uncle's backyard in the city of Belo Horizonte when a pit bull named Tita lunged at him and bit him in the left arm.
Almeida grabbed the dog by the neck and bit back - biting so hard that he lost a canine tooth.
Almeida tells the O Globo newspaper: "It is better to lose a tooth than one's life."
Stonemasons working nearby chased the dog away before it could attack again.
The Folha de S. Paulo newspaper said the boy received four stitches at a local hospital while the dog was taken to a pound and may be killed.
This reminds me of when I was in elementary, my friend was chased by a dog while he was rollerblading. I wasn't at the scene, but from the mental images I am drawing up, it is quite entertaining. I wonder why dogs attack when unprovoked.
All laughteres aside, Thank goodness the boy is fine and only needs 4 stiches.

Look at these sites-- many people incorrectly identify "pit bulls," which isn't even a breed name.

I find it interesting how it took a superstar football player for politicians to stand up and condemn dog fighting and the treatment of the dogs (Pit Bulls) and then turn around and vilify them. We all know what the problem is. We don't have a Pit Bull problem, we have a people problem.

I totally agree with Bully Defender. It is horrible what happened to that boy. I'm glad he is okay. But I just have something to say in defense of pit bulls. I'm not siding with the dog that attacked, I think any dog that attacks someone should be put down.
I just have to say that not all pit bulls are bad. My husband has had five and I've had one. It's all on how they are raised. All of the pits we've had have been raised around kids and we have never ever had an incident with any of them. They are very loyal and smart dogs and if given the chance are great pets. It's the owners who should be blamed for ANY dogs aggresive behavior. Pit bulls aim to please their owners. Don't let all pits get a bad rap because of a bunch of irresponsible pet owners.

I have been chased and attacked by several dogs as a child to adulthood..never been by a "pit bull" type of dog. They have been the tiny lap dogs to a very goofy hound type dog.
I think this boy did something pretty cool ..he used his instinct and he prevented the dog from continuing. I am sorry the outcome for the dog will not be positive.
My Staffordshire Terrier mix Pearl was rescued from a fighting compound..she is sweet and submissive..she was going to be used as bait. She lives in a house of 6 cats and is loving and playful with them. She has been a great dog.

I hope people realize that not all pit bulls are vicious and/or violent creatures. Any dog can be trained or mistreated into becoming this way. Our sweet loving pit, Bensen, is anything but. In fact, we refer to him sometimes as "Gentle Ben".

chabri. I love your comment. EXACTLY! Bad breath and lots of licking. My pitbull thinks he is a lapdog. I feel bad for kids that are attacked especially by pitbulls who are very determined and strong. However, what cause the pitbulls to bite or lung at a kid. Personally, I am so sick and tired of the media and government when it comes to these cases. Grrr.... How many times are pitbulls mis-identified? How many of these dogs are mistreated? How many are raised to fight? Raised to watch drug houses? Please take all of these into your consideration. Not ALL pits are evil. Mine is a very well behaved loving dog. I couldn't ask for a better dog. Any dog can attack. Why is coverage always on a pitbull?
at 21:14 on July 29th, 2008
:) LOL. My dog is 55 lbs, and she thinks she's a lap dog too! She is the sweetest dog I could EVER ask for. She is so amazing!
First it was the Bloodhound that had bad reputation! Then, it went to the Doberman and today it is the "pit bull."
The main reason for the media attacks is MIS-IDENTIFICATION. The second reason is that there are NO statistics on WHY the bite/attack occurred. Was the dog threatened? Mis-treated? Starving? WHERE did it happen? Did someone come into the dog's territory, or was the dog lost, scared, and looking for home?

It drives me absolutely CRAZY that there are so many irresponsible dog owners out there! Because of the pit bull's blood line, they do have fighting tendencies. That's why proper training and a little bit of common sense is so important. When properly trained, it is the most rewarding, because all these dogs want to do is to please their owners.
I have had Olive for 6 years now, and everyone I come in contact with just loves her. She's even gotten people who fear dogs to overcome their fears.
The owners should be punished in these situations.

All dogs have the ability to attack and bite. People need to take responsibility for the training and socializing of their dogs.

I just wonder how newsworthy this story would have been if the dog were any other breed? "Golden Retriever mauls woman's face, and she gets a face transplant!"
(Most news articles I'd read about the woman just mentioned that she had been mauled by a dog. Only one article mentioned it was a Golden retriever who attacked her.)
I watched the "Boy Bites Dog" video on Reuters and it was so frustratingly vague, but just based on the info in the story ("boy was just playing in the backyard", "normally loving dog Titan", "lunged at him suddenly"). What was "play" for the boy was probably interpreted as "threatening" by the dog. Although the story points out that the boy was at his uncle's house, and that Titan was a "family" dog, we don't know if Titan actually knew the boy or not.

Everyone of our American Pit Bulls are as gentle as they come. They all play with my grandchildren. They are all residents of the Gibson-Obion County Humane Society, SPCA, Inc. and have all came from animal cruetly cases we have investigated, and prosecuted the owners. There are some that do not like cats! We have 14 APB and 1 Straffordshire. They are up for adoption only after a through background check. I truly love the breed and again I agree with other people, its not the breed its the people who raise them where the problem is and giving these wonderful dogs a bad rap!

I think if you want to point fingers at all pit bulls for one dogs attack... then you should point fingers at all humans when one murders. I firmly believe each living thing has its own behavior.
at 09:38 on July 28th, 2008
I agree with bully defender. We do have a people problem when it comes to these wonderful dogs. This breed is only violent when raised to be that way. My pit was the most loving wonderful boy & I would own another one in a heartbeat! Why is it you never hear anything about any other breed when someone is attacked! But say the word "Pit Bull" & OH NO!, that breed needs to be wiped out! The stupid people with their stupid thoughts & beliefs that they are the most evil breed are the ones that need to raise one from a puppy and see just how much love these dogs have to give. The day I lost mine was the worst day of my life & I would give anything to have him back!

I feel bad for the dog, but after all it is just a dog, i'm sorry to you animal lovers, i love animals too just not dangerous ones, I mean sure many of you who own pitbulls know how to control it, but there are many irresponsible dog owners, just to day i encountered a pitbull and stayed perfectly still and tried not to panic, I tried to pretend it was a nice puppy although it was kind of hard when it has the ugliest eyes known to mankind. Also i'm 15 , so yeah i'm still a kid myself, after the dog left me alone and unharmed i didnt feel a hatred towards it, but I believe I was just lucky, well actually I believe God was watching over me. If there is a law about pitbull owners keeping their dogs locked up and i'm just not aware of it, but if their is they shoul enforce it to a greater extent. I personally dislike pitbulls. It's better for a pitbull to be killed than a human , a child who could do a greater good to this world than a pitbull who just brings pain, suffering, and panic to people. What i'm trying to get to is ,PEOPLE! keep your dogs away from kids and in your own backyards don't be irresponsible and let them wander around family communities. And if their shot from someone who panicked it was YOUR fault for being IRRESPONSIBLE. If you really care for your dog make sure other people aren't in danger if you don't want to see your dang dog get shot. It's all it takes.

Often dogs as pit bull are not ferocious without a reason, but their masters educate them in a bad way..Educate them to attack and to defende theimselves and these dogs are always under pressure and often ready to attack to obey their masters. Now, I don't want to say that this dog has made a good thing! But often the guilt is of the owners!
