Brett Clarke, 39, was shot in the chest with a speargun while diving with friends in Victoria, Australia. The spear was accidentally fired by Jim Bigness, went through Clarke's ribs into his lung, barely missing his heart. Clarke then tried to swim to shore, but hit a rock, which thrust the spear further into his body. He finally did get back to shore, and an air ambulance was called.

During the course of the incident, Clarke never lost consciousness. He told Australian media he focused on his breathing and staying calm.

"It went in up through my ribs, up into my lungs, on the left-hand side there, and the nurses here say I must have someone looking out for me upstairs," he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
