Brits claims underwater extreme ironing record
A British team of extreme ironists have claimed the world record for the most people ironing under water at the same time, with 86 brave scuba divers braving the cold waters of Gloucestershire.
The heroic effort raised more than £6,000 for the RNLI and was organised by Gareth Lock, Morag Ward and John Turnock of Yorkshire Divers. It surpases the previous record of 72 divers, set in Australia.
According to the website Extreme ironing is, "the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt." It was created in a back garden in Leicester in 1997 by Phil Shaw.
The sport's founder Phil Shaw, who goes by the moniker 'Steam', says, "I'm delighted to see that the underwater record is still hotly contested. Despite trying to be unbiased, I'm pleased that it's been claimed by the Brits after being fought out between the Kiwis and the Aussies for many years."
The underwater depth record is also held by the Brits, and was set in 2006 by Louise Trewavas (aka Dive Girl), who ironed at 137 metres.

I would think that, with their rich aquatics history, the Australians would dominate the world of underwater ironing.

You would have thought that the Aussies would rule, but after Rebecca Adlington and co.s efforts at the Olympics some Brits would say we've got it all sewn up in the water ;-)
