Bronx NY: Sweeper Sucks Up Dog
One wonders if the owner was wearing his Ipod as street sweepers are pretty loud not to notice as they come a barrelling down a city street.
But then Dogs are usually skittish when big trucks get too close to them as well, though some breeds are known to challenge anything regardless of size that comes too close. Perhaps this dog met it's match?
Sweeper sucks up dog
By AP
NEW YORK -- A street-sweeping truck roaring down a Bronx street sucked up a dog and killed it as its owner held the leash.
Robert Machin said he had just finished walking his two Boston terriers and was about to put them into his car when the truck appeared Thursday morning. The retired transit worker said he was suddenly whipped around and saw one of the dogs, Ginger, being swallowed by the sweeper's round bristles.
"I went berserk at that moment because I couldn't believe what had occurred," he said yesterday.
Machin said he yelled at the driver to stop but the truck kept going. He and friends chased the truck for 2 1/2 blocks before catching up with it. Ginger's body was later pulled from the sweeper.

Barry Artiste, I like this story. It's good stuff. Wow Barry! Would have loved to see the owner sucked up there too - though of course i wish him no lasting harm... just keep seeing in my minds eye cartoon movies of it happening... and it looks funny...

I know it does bring a dark humour to mind, one wonders what he was doing so close to the curb.
Thanks Lotus for your comments, it is much appreciated.

NYC dogs are fairly steady around cars, since they spend their lives in such a dense urban environment. Still, those spinning brushes are just straight-up menacing. I have to wonder what prevented the dog from backing away from them.

Thanks for the comments and GS Jordan, Wee dogs are skittish to begin with, and even a friggin Human knows when to get out of the way of those spinning brushes. Dogs like Humans have that Fear and Flight mentality, I can only assume the dog owner had him on such a long leash, Foo Foo couldn't get away with all the pulling and tugging.

This story is definitely worthy of being a Top Story. If there has to be an award for the best story on in 2008, it has to be this one.
I did chuckle and I probably shouldn't have.
Poor ol' Scooby.

They leave ghost bikes (white-painted bicycles) at the scenes of cyclists' deaths; there was one near my old apartment. Is there something similar for dogs, like ghost leashes or something? Maybe so, and I just never noticed...

in Tonbridge we have gravestones of all the little dogs and cats have died in the road across the road by a petrol station.

Barry Artiste,
Sounds like New York runs a pretty effective cleanup program. Where I live, it's hard enough for those sweepers to pick up leaves and cigarette butts let alone small animals in motion.
Either way that could have been a stroller with a young child just as easy as a little mutt like the one that got all washed up.
I like this story. It's good stuff.

Well I do hear New York is cracking down on their Poop And Scoop Laws, so Perhaps Foo Foo was all hunched over and getting ready to fire out a steaming Hot loaf, when all of a sudden "Whoosh" the long arm of the City Pooper Scooper sucked him up.
I don't want to sound mean, but, come on, as they describe it , do you really think a " Street Sweeper" can Roar Fast down anything, especially driven by a civil servant?, They are both pretty slow, so not noticing it or the dog as I think they are all right hand drive leaves me to believe the City Worker saw or wasn't paying attention driving like a 10 ton truck, when he should have, especially since he could have taken out the guy as well ,

Yes, you're right. It screamed of negligence to me too!

Well we have all heard of disgruntled New Yorkers, perhaps disgruntled sanitary workers applies.
