"You finally got your ring and it fell off the Brooklyn Bridge!" an unknown voice on the video cries out after Don Walling proposed to girlfriend Gina Pellicani on the Brooklyn Bridge.  Why the excited utterance?  Because as Walling was presenting the princess cut engagement ring to the woman of his dreams the proposal became a nightmare when he dropped it onto the deck below.

The entire Brooklyn Bridge proposal disaster was caught on tape by a relative who was on hand to record the moment.  Walling was not about to let a slip up cost him his perfect moment.  With the help of police who stopped traffic he climbed down to the lower deck of the bridge to retrieve the engagement ring.

Determined to save her ring, he scaled the side of the bridge as motorists, thinking he was suicidal, begged him not to jump. A police suicide-prevention van pulled up.

"I just kept telling them, 'I need to get that ring. I have to get that ring,'" Walling told NBC.

The cops stopped traffic, and with help from the family yelling down the ring's location from their walkway perch, Walling reclaimed the prize.

The platinum band was damaged, but the stones were fine. And the story has a very happy ending. The couple, both public school teachers, are planning an April 24 wedding.
