A group of Calgarians managed to grab some prime street parking spots. But, instead of parking cars, they created a temporary park — complete with grass, trees, and benches.

Calling the city’s newest park ‘sPark’, they hoped to draw attention to Calgary’s extremely car-centric culture, and the lack of public social interaction — as well as issues of the environment and privatization of public space.

The park was set up on the north side of 17 Avenue SW, between 6 and 7 Streets, on Saturday morning and is expected to be taken down after nightfall. The parking spaces were paid for as if a car was occupying them.

Grant Neufeld, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Great post and photos!

Do you think this helped to bring awareness to the issues surrounding Calgary's 'car-centric culture'?

Thanks for the kudo.

I don’t know if it raised awareness of Calgary’s domination by cars (since you normally can’t help but be aware of it if you are anywhere in this city).

What it did do is get people talking about public space, community and the possibility of doing things differently in our city.
