Calgary transit driver Dawn Hagel is a hero to Duke these days. She rescued him from two coyotes who were looking to make a meal out of him.
The pooch, cowering under a truck as two coyotes circled, was picked up on the side of the road Tuesday morning by a Calgary transit bus driver
When Hagel approached the pickup that Duke was cowering under the hungry coyotes ran off. She brought him into the bus and at the end of her route, Duke was safely returned to his owner.
Young dogs often are prey to hungry coyotes. If they are too bold they don't get to be old dogs. One of their tricks to lure dogs to their death is to pretend to play close by, moving ever closer to the main pack. Coyotes can live within urban settings and may interbreed with larger at large dogs, creating more dangerous 'coydogs' which can be quite aggressive and bold around humans.

"If they are too bold they don't get to be old dogs."
This reminds me of one theory why children are afraid of the dark. In pre-historic times, children who had no fear would be more likely to wander off from the camp fire into the blackness and get eaten as a result. Darwin saw to it that the only remaining children were the ones left with a healthy respect for nighttime!
