Scientists discovered that the skull, found by a boy while walking his dog in 2004 on the banks of a river, turned out to belong to a European woman who passed away over 260 years ago. The discovery led to serious doubts regarding the historical fact that Captain James Cook was the first European who stepped on the shores of the island in 1769.

Historical fact? Abel Tasman was here a long time before Cook. People from China were probably here centuries before that. The English wrote the history of New Zealand and of course made themselves seem like the great discoverers. They weren't. Captain Cook went to Tahiti and was shown how to get to New Zealand by a local whose relations were already here. And he had the navigation skill and knowledge to get here. Unlike Captain Cook. And of course the real fact is Maori people were here first (-:
