A German chocolate-maker has run afoul of the Protestant Church after selling Chocolate Jesus candies.

Frank Oynhausen founded the "Sweet Lord" chocolate company, which makes chocolate Jesus figures. A 100-gram figure costs around 15 euros. The figures are for sale through the company's website.

A devout Christian, Oynhausen says he came up with the idea of as a way to honor Christ. Church officials in Germany, however, think otherwise.

'It is terrible that Jesus is being wrapped up in gold foil and sold along with chocolate bunnies, edible penguins and lollipops,' said Aegidius Engel, a spokesman for the archbishopric of nearby Paderborn.

'This is ruining the symbol of Jesus himself,' he added.

Oynhausen may not have the approval of the church, but he likely would have a fan in singer Tom Waits, who recorded the song "Chocolate Jesus" in 1999.

Well its got to be a chocolate jesus
Make me feel good inside
Got to be a chocolate jesus
Keep me satisfied

So my idea for a Jesus ice lolly (popsicle) with a cross shaped stick might not be a good idea?
