Last night, during the course of the festivities with our bestest friends, I used the words "supercilious" (incorrectly) and "ancillary" (correctly). There was some minor mocking at my multi-syllabic mutterings, given the amount of alcohol that had been consumed to that point.
However, despite the scoffing I could be in for, I have made a resolution. I don't do resolutions, as a rule, so this is big for me. I resolve to increase my vocabulary this year. Because, after all, I'm reading a novella (just a novella, people!) and I've already had to look up three words and my children can use words like "vitriolic" and "quotidian" in sentences without skipping a beat and, dammit, I want to seem smarter!
So with all that in mind, I started off the New Year with a hearty helping of Random House. I'd have preferred the Webster's but when you're under the gun, you take what you can get!
