Poor baby, god will always with you in heaven...

The dead boy was found wrapped in newspaper in a driveway in Denmead Avenue at Campbelltown at about 8:00am ACST.

Police say it appeared the baby was just hours old and say the umbilical cord was still attached.

Police knocked on doors in the street and located the teenage mother at the house next door to where the body was found.

Tragic mum 'didn't know she was pregnant'

THE teenage mother thought to have left her baby in a neighbour's driveway had no idea she was pregnant, a family friend says.

"She honestly didn't know, no one knew, and I honestly don't think she realised what was happening," said the friend, who did not want to be identified.

Friends rallied around the 18-year-old mother yesterday as she remained in the care of doctors at Adelaide's Women's and Children's Hospital, AdelaideNow reports.

The friend described the young mother as "naive" and said the family has been devastated by the tragedy which came to light when a neighbour found the newborn boy's body in his Campbelltown driveway about 8am on Monday.

As they struggled to come to terms with the tragedy yesterday:

The friend said the young mother had been happy after being told only three weeks ago she had been accepted for a job at a childcare centre.

'"Even though she's 18, it's more like she's 13 or 14," she said.

"She's a normal kid, but a very lonesome kid, she doesn't have a huge circle of friends, she struggled at school but was a part of a national choir," she said.

"But there's never been any issues. I can't imagine (the teenager) wrapping a baby and putting it outside.

"The scary thing is that she is not a girl who goes out drinking or who does drugs and the ironic thing is that (her mother) and (her father) would have loved that child. They are hardworking battlers but really would have loved it."

The friend also gave an insight into the events of Sunday night as the young mother unexpectedly began to give birth, alone and without help.

The teen's parents and brother had been out that night and did not see her until the next morning.
