Does Anyone Actually Like Cold Weather ?
So. Given a real choice, would anyone choose to live in a cold place ?
The fact is that I live in England. And it’s cold here now. But I put up with the cold because I know that for most of the year it’s not cold. It’s never very warm but it’s nice. Right now it’s not nice. It’s very cold and I really am not happy.
But how much cold per annum could I take before I disliked living here so much that I couldn’t take any more and left. This is where I introduce the ‘Cold Index’. A formula that works out how much cold a person can handle before they give up and move.
x = ((a-v)*d)
where a is the minimum allowed temperature depending on your ability to put up with the cold, v is the actual average minimum temperature for where you live over the given time period of days which is set as d.
Now, I live in London where I hate November, December, January and February. I can put up with March because I can see the days getting longer and have hope.
The average minimum temps are 5, 4, 2 and 2 degrees and I have a tolerance of just 5 degrees. Any lower and I get seriously upset.
Therefore, I have a ‘Cold Index’ of 210. I have decided that this is now my absolute minimum Cold Index and if, in any given year, it gets lower than this then I’m off. Probably the Bahamas.
For anyone wondering why I created the Cold Index, I was inspired by 10 things I hate about christmas. However, I don't hate Christmas at all, just the cold bit !
