I don't think this will get the media coverage that Michael Vick did, but it is basically the same situation. What is even more ridiculous is that the 40year old denied any dog fighting and that the pit bulls were used for a pulling contest.

Police have busted a suspected dog fighting operation in Milwaukee.

The accused ring leader now faces some serious charges.

Steve Blackmon was in court at the Milwaukee County Courthouse Thursday.

Police searched his home and say they found several injured dogs, plus evidence of a dog fighting ring. Some of that evidence: dogs with cut up faces, and half a dozen cages and fighting rings.

What was inside the house and quotes from officers:

Animal Control rescued six adult pit bulls and five puppies. According to the criminal complaint, “at least two of the dogs had heavy scaring and recent injury to the head and front leg areas."
Sometimes the dogs will be put up for adoption but unfortunately in this situation all 11 dogs and puppies were euthanized.
Animal Control says it’s hard to place these dogs in a good home because they've been trained to fight since they were puppies.

It's truly appalling, the treatment that these amazing dogs receive from a certain segment of our society and then invariably the dogs are blamed, and cast as horrible man-eating beasts to be feared, loathed and put to death, by the mainstream media.  These dogs are innocent victims of people whose motives I could not possibly ever understand.  Pit bulls are some of the most intelligent, loyal and loving dogs I've ever known or ever will know and it pains me to know how horribly they are treated and that the best most of them can hope for is to be rescued from the fighters and put to death.  These dogs could have been rehabilitated just like most of Michael Vick's dogs were, but since it's not a high profile case, they've met with the same fate that the majority of these wonderful dogs do....an untimely and unnecessary death.

Stories like this make us Pit Bull lovers disgusted. If everyone only knew how loving these dogs are. They are truly missing out on the best dog on earth. And as for anyone who is using them as fighting dogs, are ruining the breed.

I really do hope this story gets out there.

My pitbull Ruby was a result of a dog fighting ring, she was used as the dog that trained "new" pups what it felt like to be rolled.  When we first got her she would attack and kill any small animal or dog that came near her. Many neighborhood cats suffered her wrath.  Now after almost two years, she is a calm, docile dog towards most animals. Her "boyfriend" is my housecat Monkey and she is perfectly tolerant of the ferret and my fluffy Yorkshire terrier.  In the right homes and right situations a pitbull can be a loving member of the family.  People that intentionally fight these animals and/or kill them for their inability to perform should be thrown in a pit covered in filet-mignons and have a pitbull turned loose on them.  God bless all those that have saved and are trying to save this wonderful breed

Thanks for sharing hollypw. Glad to hear your dog is calm now. Must have been hard to change the way shes thinks and acts.

The primary reason Pit Bulls are used in the ring is their overwhelming desire to please. If they're taught to believe that killing another dog is what will please their master, they'll do it. But that same desire is what makes it possible to turn a battle-ravaged Pit into a loving household dog.

I'll fight tooth and nail to remove the stigma surrounding one of the most amazing breeds out there. Those of us who know and love our Pit Bulls will be working hard to return them to their "All-American Dog" status :).

Hollypw.....

Glad to see you have such high regard for all the other animals in your nieghborhood.

So you say when you first got her" she would attack and kill any small animal or dog that came near her".

Many neighborhood cats suffered her wrath??????  Well I am glad that your dog finally has all the "KILLING" out of her......you are the kind of person which gives Pit Bull Owners a Bad Name....and the breed a BAD RAP.

You let your dog Roam Free, you let it kill and then you tell how great it is doing now...

You are not a responsible dog owner, and my fear is that you have kids and your kids will end up being lunch for your dog...

(Note: These dogs are photos of pit bull mixes, but these dogs were not in any way involved in the dog fighting ring mentioned in this article. Their photos are only supplied for reference.)

Does "Best Friends" know about this?  They are the sanctuary that took in some of the Michael Vick dogs.

One recent morning, I found a pit bull tied to my front fence, in a residential neighborhood across the street from an elementary school. The dog was a healthy, relatively young, and intact male. On any attempt to approach the dog, he became quite aggressive, so I must conclude that he had been abused and/or trained to fight. The irresponsibility of the dog's owner in dumping him like that just blows me away.

Unfortunately, my only option was removal by the SPCA, as the city's animal control agency is overtaxed and no rescue organizations could help. The SPCA would have released him only to the owner, who obviously was not going to come looking for him, so the dog was euthanized three days later.

This is an image of our pitbull Lily and our eldest cat Jake. Lily and Jake are absolute best friends. Both check each other to see if the other is doing ok, and as you can see from this shot... Jake loves to use Lily as a way to scratch his back! Not only do they do this, but they also clean each other too!

Our Pit Bull/ Lab mix "Dotz" pictured above (white dog with black spot on eye) is 2 years old now and settling down into adulthood.  She is a very smart and affectionate dog, extremely social with people and other dogs.  (She only knows one cat that teases her while she is leashed).  She is very motherly towards our 14 year old Westie/Poodle mix and 7 year old Chow Chow.  I was initially worried about her being a Pit Bull when we took her in as an 8 week old puppy but she is really a very good family dog.

As I was walking around a park in Colorado Springs, CO I quickly noticed this pit bull tied up to a tree with no one around. The dog seemed very friendly but unfortinantly have had a bad experiances with the breed. But the beauty of this dog was something I had to capture.

Mia is an American Pit Bull Terrier from a great dog rescue group in Seattle called Bullseye Dog Rescue. They specialize in Pit Bull breeds and provide a lot of education and support to ensure that dogs adopted through them provide an antithesis to the negative portrayals caused by irresponsible owners and attention-grabbing headlines.

i just do not understand what makes someone want to do such horrible things to these animals...My pit is a loving affectionate couch potatoe in the house and a crazy fun loving clown outside of the house...i rescued him from a fighting ring and he has no animal aggression at at (except when other males try and dominate him) but thats typical of any male..including human.

this is a photo of a bull terrier puppy, not a pit bull puppy -they are less agressive than pit bulls and are of a different species.

the photos of the two white dogs are not pitbulls, but bull terriers. Known to be less agressive bull terriers are of an different breed. The bull terrier is a direct ancestor of a pitbull, I know because I have one, and I want another!=)

Meet Axel! He is a Red Nose Pit-Bull who is the sweetest boy you will ever meet. He is treated like such a big baby! When we first got Axel he suffered from a severe skin disorder. After three months of love and the proper vet care he has made a full recovery. I can't imagine my life without Axel.

Don't get me started about Pit-Bulls! I have such a strong opinion about them. I'm so sick and tired of people blaming the dog when it's the owners fault! I could go on and on about my feelings about Pit-Bulls but I won't. Just watch the special "DogTown" about the Vick's dogs and that pretty much sums up how I feel about Pit-Bulls. They are the sweetest dogs on earth!!!!!

I live in Atlanta and in an area that pitbull abuse is jaw dropping.  As a owner of two pitbulls, I am always, always amazed when I do go out in public with my dogs.   I get two questions "do you want to sell your dog?" and "do you want to breed your dog"   On walks, my female dog, she gets whistled at, slow down drive bys, and even pull overs with occupants coming forth to see if I want to sell or breed.   My male dog, because of his size and bulk I assume, has been the target of someone trying to get him out of my car and then asking me the questions again.     Right,  as If I would ever entertain this thought in a million years.   Both my dogs being rescued, and seeing the majority of my friends pits who are rescue and countless conversations about what our dogs did today and all the ways we love them.   Countless conversations on what we see on the streets of Atlanta with pitbulls, and with Michael Vick supporters and how many articles we read in the area about a pitbulls needing rescue or foster.  Sell or Breed?  At the end of the day, it comes down to two verbs for some choice characters to view my dogs as.   It is sad that they will never know what we know about this truly amazing animal and breed.  They don't deserve these dogs, and they will never know what it is like to wake up with a big fat genuine bully smile in your face and how your day is made by that!!!

To HollyPW:

I am very concerned by your lack of remorse concerning the "many neighborhood cats" that your rescued PB attacked (and I assumed . . . killed) during the two year period while you were "rehabilitating" your dog.  I imagine that most of these cats belonged to families in your neighborhood and I am sure that they were devastated by the sudden disappearance of their beloved pet.

I am glad to hear that your dog is now tolerant of other animals, but I am very concerned that you seem to have no remorse for the pain that you and your dog caused to those who live around you.  I am wondering why you did not feel any responsibility towards ensuring the safety of other peoples pets in your neighborhood?

If we, as a society, are going to allow people to take on the responsibility of rehabilitating a pit bull that has been exposed to dog fighting, then there has to be assurances that no harm will come to the families and other pets living nearby.  Unfortunately, you are one of those PB owners that most people in our communities fear . . . and it is because of your actions that PB's are being put to death on a daily basis.  Shame on you!

When i hear stories like this it just breaks my heart. I love my 2 pits and they are as close to me as my children.

Any dog can be trained to fight, protect or injure someone or something but for some reason this is the only breed that the media focuses on. My red nose was used as a breeder of which im sure some of the puppies fell in to the wrong hands but he is just as sweet as can be, and our brindle/dalmation mix was rescued from a shelter at 4 months old. We attend a bully bash every year with our babies in hopes to educated the ignorant society we live in. Maybe one day people will see how loving these dogs can be and how a min pin, shit zu, & yorkie can be bullies.

"Banish the Deed, NOT THE BREED" We have all heard it before and it is true! Yes, this beautiful breed of dog was bred to fight but with the right, responsible owner who takes the time to raise and train them correctly, they can be as precious as a kitten! This dog, aptly named "Kitty" is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met! His owner is very responsible and knows how to raise and treat dogs the right way! Kitty is a gem as is his owner! Just look at that smile - who can resist him?

This dog was found pregnant wandering around in an isolated desert area of Kuwait. She had obviously been excessively bred and used as bait. Her temperament, however, was fully intact. She was a lovely animal.

This is Monster, my brother's pit bull (more like mine, since I have taken care of him since he was 6 weeks old). This picture was taken a few months ago after Monster had a field day destroying the backyard. Loving and playful as ever, he can be a handful when trying to keep him entertained (he loves to give you love and affection). But I have to say, he is one of the sweetest animals I have ever encountered in my life (and i'm not a big pit bull fan either). Monster is 3 years old.
