'Doomsday May 21': Harold Camping Demonstration in Washington DC

Some Believe the World Will End on May 21, 2011

If you were in Washington, D.C. on May 6, you may have seen the "Doomsday" demonstration at the Washington Monument. Or maybe you saw a Doomsday ad on the New York subway.

Basically, a group of Christian fundamentalists want you to believe that Doomsday (i.e. the Rapture, the end of the world) will occur on May 21, 2011. What makes these people think that the world will end in a few weeks' time?

A radio host told them.

Harold Camping: Second Doomsday Prediction

Harold Camping, an 89-year-old Christian fundamentalist and radio host, has predicted the End Times for May 21. This is his second such prediction; obviously the world didn't end in 1994, so we're not sure why people are so keen to believe him this time.

Believers: World to End May 21

Nobody can quite follow Harold Camping's reasoning on this whole Doomsday thing, but they believe him anyway, because Camping has a persuasive radio voice.

What we want to know is whether or not Harold Camping filed his income tax return, and what will happen when May 22 dawns. You may think that such a belief, here in 21st-Century America, is a fringe occurence, but that is not the case. According to Pew Research Center, 41% of American Christians polled believe that the Second Coming will take place before 2050.

According to the Washington Post article linked below, one of the attendees of the Doomsday rally was an employee of the Department of Homeland Security named Gary Vollmer. We humbly suggest that, on May 22, he re-evaluate his career path.

“Have you heard the awesome news?” the side of the RVs asked, in big bold letters. “The End of the World is Almost Here!”

Harold Camping is NOT A CHRISTIAN! No True Christian would follow this man. He is an arrogant Old fool who believes his own Bible translations. His followers are the worst, they trust “HAROLD CAMPING INTERPRETATION OF THE BIBLE...NOT THE BIBLE! Harold Camping is a horrible Bible teacher that is ruining families! The Bible clearly states that we will be able to see signs of the coming rapture and return of Christ to the earth. However, it also clearly states that no man will know the day or the hour these events will happen. Best thing to do is make sure our hearts are right with God, then no matter when it happens you will be fine. But, this May 21 prediction is another bogus prediction that has no merit.

Wow! People will believe anything. If there is a god, he is probably tired of hearing from crazy people like this. And hes probably pretty mad people are not doing what they were put on this rock to do... And that is LIVE LIFE! And dont you think it is a bit suspect that most cult leaders are usually dieing or coming to the end of there life, like this 89 year old nut job! These people are going to feel pretty damn dumb when May 22 rolls around, and they have spent there savings, and have to find a new job. www.jamulbooksandmusic.wordpress.com

Funny thing is, the rapture could occur anytime according to Scripture, and that happens to include May 21. If, by some serendipity, it did occur on May 21, it won't be because Camping predicted it. It would be hilarious if it occured on May 22, actually! Also, the date May 21st scrolls through numerous time zones as the earth rotates. Those mocking the loudest, even if nothing spectacular happens May 21st, are secretly terrified such an event could ever happen.

What makes Mr. Camping feel that the Bible has the correct calculations and not the Torah or the Koran?  Besides, any one of us could die this second or the next, Rapture or not.  We should apply principles of humanity and Morality and civility at any moment of life to our lives and just live the life you have been given.

Camping is just another of the false teachers who presume to know what Jesus Himself stated was not revealed, "by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of." (2Pt. 2:2)Contrary to a common misconception, there are proven principles of interpreting the Bible, like as we engage in every day (context, linguistics, genre, etc.) but Camping's manner of interpretation is highly but inconsistently allegorical, and also assigns a prophetic significance to numbers as needed, allowing him to wrest meanings out of texts that simply are not there. This esoteric eschatology saw Camping falsely predicting that 1994 would be the year of the Lord's return, and using to his highly adaptable methodology he can easily rework his May 21 date for a another one, like as the so-called Jehovah's Witnesses have done so many times. A countdown clock and fuller examination can be seen here: peacebyjesus.witnesstoday.org/Camping.html

I would like to bet Harold Camping $100,000 that the world will not end on May 21.  Either way, I won't have to pay.  Put your money where your mouth is, H.C.

I love it when people who believe:

  1. The earth flooded and an ark was built that had two of each animal on it.
  2. A man rose from the dead.
  3. A sea was parted so humans could walk across.
  4. There was a talking bush
  5. A baby was imaculatly concieved.
  6. etc

Call a man a crackpot for saying he knows that date the world will end.  Look up Poe Laws on WikiPedia.  It couldn't be more true here.  Mr. Camping's predecitions are no less crazy than anybody who believes the above...

I agree, Immertech!  It's hard to believe that people believe in any of it.

...or that ALL things in existence today came from a long long ago explosion of which they didn't witness, can't confirm, and have thousands of differing explanations as to why they believe (have trust or faith in) that those things are not only true but that they have been getting better and more trustable "all by themselves" (undirected or created). so who has more faith?... that God did and is able to do all of the above 1-6 list. Or that no one or nothing but self replicating laws directed themselves. May 21st? Who knows...God does...either way be ready today-the 21st or whatever day God chooses. www.needGod.com

More willful ignorance.  When will it end?  Probably never.  The world will end when it ends.  Of course it will be on the date it 'happens'.  You'll just have to be there then.  Humanity is a wonderful species,  ever thinking, growing...but these are just 'stories' just like the holy books...written by men for man's manipulation of the ignorant, believing masses.

Perhaps Harold forgot the verse "pride comes before a fall". He keeps claiming that the “THE BIBLE GUARANTEES IT!" what he fails to realize is that this is his (false) interpretation of the bible. It's sad that so many, around the world, believe him. I fear that the fallout from this will be huge. If you're interested in counter arguments to Camping's false teachings, please visit my website: Patrick OToolewww.judgmentdaytruth.com

hmmm...  May 21 where? in Washington? Manila? Jerusalem? the world is ending for those in war-torn countries already. the world already ended for people who died in those tragedies. it'll be just another day in our world we believe we own or in control of.

Camping is a heretic and a false prophet.  But this is not simply because of his absurd May 21st prediction.  He teaches terrible error on almost every fundamental Bible Truth.  The man is utterly intoxicated with his own intellect and importance.  I suspect that even when May 21st comes and goes without incident he will have some excuse that will enable him to continue on.  While many of his devotees will likely continue to follow his insanity, this time thing might turn ugly.
