NP Rank:
Drive in LA? Read War and Peace in One Year
San Fransisco is next highest at 40 hours, allowing you enough time to review The Ring Cycle 2.5 times or watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy 6.5 times.
Every day, millions of Americans sit in traffic on their way to and from work. In that time, you could do a lot of things, like listen to an audiobook of War and Peace, relax to the sound of Wagner’s Ring cycle, or take in the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy.
If you live in any of these cities, here is the number of hours you waste in traffic each year, and the number of time you could get through these works.

This is crazy! Talk about wasting part of your life just getting to and from work. I heard on the radio the other day that 60% of workers in Canada would apparently take a pay cut if it would mean they could shorten their commute.

We assume that the current system we live in is so much better than the systems of the past. We think "Oh, look! Technology! This is great! Our ancestors never had this." When in reality, most people live their lives for their job instead of living their lives for happiness and bettering the world.

I think public transportation might very well be the answer to this traffic problem, for it enables you to do something during those hours of traffic, like write something, read a book. view a movie on your portable media player.

Hmm...I could use a little time to catch up on my Tolstoy.

Seems like a good use of your time I guess

Everyone should take the time to read more - our imaginations have no special effects budget limitations and can look way cooler than any CGI work in our minds - we should all explore between the covers more

Not I. Work is about half a block away. I sometimes walk. :)

Amy,
"I heard on the radio the other day that 60% of workers in Canada would apparently take a pay cut if it would mean they could shorten their commute."
They should move closer to the office. The higher housing expense is essentially a cut in pay. ;)

Never had a car in my life (although I've had my license for 17 years). I found that having to rent or borrow a car is a great barrier that makes me think twice about not using public transport or my bike, and makes a public-transport-friendly living situation (I live close to work, close to the city, in walking distance from shops, etc).

Vintage and thrifted books are some of my favourites, because the money goes directly to small, locally owned businesses, and keeps good books from taking up room in a landfill. I like to read while taking the bus to work.

Wasteful economies are on there way out. Along with the state and its central banking fraud.

Boy am I glad to live in a small town where I spend virtually no time in traffic!
Thought it was an interesting article though, especially as War and Peace is next on my book list. \
I wonder what all those people do with those 72 hrs of time in their cars?
at 05:25 on September 19th, 2008
I'm surprised there aren't more babies conceived during that commute lol

In England I bet it's a longer time because of our little roads, we're all squashed together! I'm lucky I can drive out of rush hours. It used to be 'Rush Hour' now it starts earlier and seems to go on forever.. so it's 'Rush Hours!'
I adore books I even worked in the library, I used to feel like the books welcomed me with open arms every morning! So I was surrounded by book-readers daily. My small grand-daughter carries a book about with her and even takes one to bed instead of a teddy-bear....erm...I think she'd find that a bit heavy if it was @War and Peace'!

Oddly enough I already listen to audiobooks in the car on my ipod... I'd probably be more annoyed with traffic or long drives if I couldn't relax and listen to my favorite books :)
