Good Friday evening, the police Emergency Response Team with guns "resembling miniature AK47s", according to a witness, entered the Jubilee Rooms on Main St. on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Their goal was to nab a suspect who had entered the Jubilee, assaulted his ex-girlfriend who lives there, then barricaded himself in the washroom with a long knife.

It still shocks me that this kind of event happens in Vancouver; the city certainly is changing from what I knew it to be even only 10 years ago. And I'm not sure it's changing for the better.

I don't see the problem. A criminal assaults someone, locks himself in a hotel washroom and makes threats. Police show up. Protect the victim; apprehend the criminal and no shots are fired. What could be wrong with that?
