Emily Pridham: Schoolgirl Supended for Charity Head Shave

Emily Pridham, a fifteen-year-old schoolgirl in Queensland, Australia, was suspended from Mt. Alvernia College, a Catholic school, for shaving her head to raise money for cancer research. Emily Pridham's father suffers from cancer. Emily's family is outraged, citing the fact that nowhere in the school's rules is it stated that girls cannot shave their heads. Emily Pridham's friends formed a Facebook group in her support, which, in itself, became an extension of the overall argument.

The Catholic girls' school has cited its dress code policy for the temporary ban.

Emily's mother Barbara Pridham said she was "gobsmacked" at the school's punishment and said the family had been given no warning about the possible consequences.

Emily Pridham was expelled on account of her abusive behaviour towards her homeroom teacher, along with various other offences. The school cited ongoing issues, not uniform infringments. She was suspended on Friday, proceeded to shave her head on the weekend, then showed up in school on Monday, despite being suspended. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Mount Alvernia is a great school. I should know, as I am a student here right now. Emily was participating in Shave For a Cure, and because she is under 18 needs the permission of both her parents, and the school. Mt. A offered to sponsor Emily for our annual Shave For a Cure drive. Last year, we raised thousands of money for the cause, and she has omitted truths, consequently giving Mt. A a bad name. Yesterday while walking home, I was shouted at on numerous occasions. Being called scumbags and a stain on society is uncalled for.   Mt. A is known for its various outreach endeavours, it is a shame the media has twisted like this. Emily has been supported throughout her schooling in relation to her father's illness. In fact, last year she spoke at our Shave For a Cure fundraiser about her father. Emily has never raised an issue about how the school has dealt with her, or her father's illness, until now. Mt. A is a great school, and Dr. Tuite has handled the situation with grace, and has respected Emily, even though the respect is not mutual. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Dear Nead I would like to advise that at no time was Emily suspended from Mt. A for abusive behavious, nor have I EVER been advised she has been abusive.  I was advised by the Year 10 Co-Ordinator on Monday, not Friday, or any other day, that I needed to collect Emily from school as she had been suspended for shaving her head.  May I further point out that Emily does not need the permission of the school to shave her head, only a parent, which I gave happily.  Neither has Mt. A offered to sponsor Emily in this "shave" or any other.  I had a meeting with Kerrie Tuite last Thursday (4 days after the suspension) and none of above issues you mention were raised by Ms. Tuite.  In fairness to Mt. A I have always been happy with the school and I agree they have always been supportive of my family, in prayer and other ways.  At no time have I or Emily said that Mt. A does not contribute to charities and assists in many fundraising activities.  It is unfortunate that the students of Mt A have been left to bear the brunt when all of this could have been resolved had I been asked in on the Monday, (when I was in the office to collect Emily)  not the Thursday to discuss a resolution.  I believed then and I continue to believe now that the matter was handled very poorly and continues to be handled poorly by the administration of Mt Alvernia.  Thank you for your comments and good luck in the future.

I dont get this.! The young woman can not be as bad as she is painted, did anyone consider ,she may have wanted to make amends for previous so called bad behaviour.

she lied

This is stupid, Emily was not suspended for shaving her head. She was suspended for abusing her home room teacher, and having nail polish on after the school formal, which she shouldn't of gone to since she is in year 10. Mount Alvernia is such a good school, and support everything that students do. If she had of spoken to Mrs Tuite more then she wouldn't of gotten in trouble for shaving her head, but that isn't the point. She has said she was suspended for shaving her head, THAT'S NOT TRUE THE MEDIA HAS CHANGED THE STORY.

so irritated

I don't know a lot about this Emily Pridham girl as I am an ex-Mt. Alvernia student. I've had my ups and downs with Mt. A and some of its teachers... but I've always thought it was a good school. I am fully agreeing with both you Mt. A girls. Good on you. Mt A. pride. Screw the other idiots who choose to believe that this girl is mature. If she was smart she would have done the professional thing and ask the school's permission to shave her head. If she was mature...she wouldn't have omitted facts about her behaviour that led to her suspension ie. abuse of teacher, attending the formal when she shouldn't be (unless she was invited?) The media may have changed the story. But maybe it's because the story had already been changed when reported to the media.

ughh

I cannot handle these things being said anymore. I got yelled at when I was walking to school this morning and yelled at from a car. Mount A is my school and I am proud to call myself a Mount Alvernian. Emily was offered a chance to shave her head at the end of term but she was suspended due to the fact that she abused her home room teacher. She then came to school on monday with her head shaved. Some of us girls are very scared and we are frightened to wear our uniforms, afraid that

sick of this shit.

why is mount alvernia being blamed for something that some arrogant little girl lied about. Mount a is a great school. and the principal is a lovely woman. i am a mount alvernian and i know that we as the mount alvernian community support the principals decision. emily pridham is a lying, arrogant trouble-maker.

MTA PRIDE!

Dear readers, I am a proud student at MTA. I used to be friends with Emily, however since this happened I think I would rather move schools then attend a school with her! I would never wish to move schools as it is a wonderful school and Dr. Tuite is the best principle anyone could ask for! I wish that Emily would own up to that fact that she is lying and say sorry to the very hurt Dr. Tuite.

I have a strong feeling that this girl being suspended for misbehavior is a bogus claim to cover up the arses of some really ignorant people based on the fact that first of all I doubt her parents would lie about the school's claims of dress code misconduct, and secondly, don't regular suspensions last a few days (typically 3 days to a week?) WHY then is she not allowed to return to school until her hair grows back? This is a sick and desperate attempt to cover up extreme distate and poor judgement on the school's part. I guess they didn't count on the negative attention they have placed upon themselves. The girl and her family deserve an apology at the very least.   Kindest Regards all the way from Canada!!

Mt A Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Umm.... i am at Mt Alvernia and i know exactly what happened. Emily was in the home room next to mine and she was continually seen walking out early and heard swearing at the teacher. The only reason that no one heard that she was disruptive is because she didn't metion it in ANY of the interveiws that she had. Seeing as im in year 8, Mrs Tuite is the first principal I've had at Mt Alvernia, but she is SUCH a great principal. And what the hell would you know!? You don't even go to our school, let alone live in the same country!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must have a very thick head to believe that she was suspended fromshaving her head. She was suspended for swearing at her homeroom teacher. She is an attention seeking little brat who uses her dads illness to get away with things

wow - coming from Canada i'm sure you know a hell of a lot.. nott emily swore at her homeroom teacher and was suspended on the friday previously she then returned to school on monday when she was supposed to be on suspension for abusing her teacher and was told to go home emily saw this as an opportunity to act in the way she has always done - attention seeking thanks for your mis-informed pathetic comment mta has alot to be proud for - we're an amazing school

This whole thing has been enitrely blown out of proportion. Emily was not suspended because she shaved her head, rather it was the last straw for her, considering she was abusive towards staff and students. She's a fifteen year old attention seeking girl who, when given the opportunity to shave her head as a part of the Shave For A Cure organisation, turned it down becuase she had been invited to another school's semi-formal. If she truly cared about raising awareness for cancer, she would have shaved her head when she was given the opportunity to by the school. The reason she was suspended is because she's not a good person. Emily has stirred up all this negative attention for Mount Alvernia and as a student there I have personally suffered the consequences of this. Waiting at a bus stop earlier, I was referred to as "scum" due to the fact that I attend Mount Alvernia. Um, sorry, but what do I have to do with another student's suspension whether unfair or not? The public need to get their facts straight and not be sucked in by the warped portrayal of events being publicised by the media.

dear readers,

as many of you know, Emily Pridham has seeked the media for help but have you noticed its only her story that they are saying?oh and you think that Mt Alvernians are bad? well look at yourselves!i have been called names and i have been targeted with dirty food!you see, i could go to the media and complain about Emily Pridham causing all this caos! but i don't because i am a sensible human being, and because i do not make up lies. Emily Pridham has twisted the story, and to all those people out there who believe her, well i am disgraced! do you really believe that a school principle would call a child a freak? A FREAK?!?! it is bullshit!!! to all of you people out there that believe the Emily Pridham story, ask yourselves this, would a principle who has been supporting Emily call her a freak? NO THEY WOULDN'T!!!!!!! if you think we are judgemental people, well than look at yourseleves! you are judging people who yuo don't know and you havn't heard there story!!!! Mt Alvernia College has done nothing but help her, this is what we get?? don't believe her stories, believe mine. think about it, seriously.

Nothing but truth

I am just going to write a quick comment. I don't go to Mt A yet but in 2 years that will be my school and my sister does go there and she told me what happened and I would just like to ask one question. WHO ARE YOU GOING TO BELIEVE!!!!!!!? One person or the rest of the Mt Alvernia School!!!!!!!!!?

anonymous.

This story about Emily has gotten way outta hand! I am a Mt Alvernian student and absolutely proud of it! I would never want to change my school for anything in the world. We are run by Franciscan Values which are the values that St Francis and Clare taught. One of their values is RESPECT. We just finished a term this year focusing on respect and what Emily has done to us is simply DISrespectful. I dont understand why she had to take this to the media when it could have been solved easily and if she went through the right connections and links, the would have been able to do it. She was garenteed to be able to shave it on the last day of school for a funraiser. She makes us look like hard nosed bitches who dont even give a damn about anyone else. Just this year alone we have raised over $14 000 just for cancer related issues and are currently doing a Christmas Fundraiser for local families for St Vincent de Paul. I know Emily for what she has been up to. She is always breaching the schools codes and rules. More often then not, i see her in the office either taking make up off, or nail polish or just having a talking with the Year 10 Pastrol Guardian. She is not as innocent as she has become.

I find it sooo frustrating walking around in my school uniform, trying to keep my head held high, when i get people chucking rubbish out the windows of cars and throwing it at me, yelling out stuff and saying we are scums and bogans and how they will never be accociated with the college. I went to swimming on Tuesday afternoon and all of the parents were death staring me and whispering amongst themselfs about me, and i just thought to myself, 'WHAT HAVE I DONE?'

Im a Mt Alvernian Girl, and im proud of it. If theres anything I can say to get people to understand what im trying to say is that.. THERE ARE TWO SIDES OF A STORY.

Emily is nothing more than a liar.  Sorry that your dad has cancer but should have tried to help him and not have your 15 minutes of fame. you have disgraced a community a whole hearted and caring people.  Emily you should feel ashamed of yourself.

What Should Be Yelled

Taken from blogspot: whatshouldbeyelled.blogspot.com/2009/11/reflection-on-our-world.html ...Back fifty years ago, you would never think of disobeying your teachers. They were giving you opportunity, they were giving you a chance to do well in life later on. To disobey them was the most ungrateful thing to do. And yet here we are, having to suspend a student for verbally abusing a teacher. What right does that girl think she has to attack a teacher like that? Every right of course! That story goes further. See this girl who verbally abused a teacher is the very same girl who is on the news tonight for getting expelled for “shaving her head, which the principal found disgusting and suspended her because she didn’t want freaks in her school.”What sickens me is the fact that this is a lie. This girl, Emily Pridham, has always been an attention seeker. She is one of those fickle sort of girls who place an awful lot of importance on social status. Anyone who doesn’t have a very high social status isn’t worth anything. And Emily Pridham has never had a very high social status. So she has always done things to draw attention to herself, probably in an attempt to gain a higher social status. In a nutshell, she’s a wannabe.I do feel sorry for her. All her life she has had to struggle with her father who is dying of cancer. It could possibly be that the stress of this ordeal pushes her past the limits some times. But I don’t believe that there is any excuse for verbally abusing a teacher, using atrocious language. And it hasn’t been only one time either. This is the real reason that our principal suspended her. But to then turn around and go calling to the media telling them that she was suspended for shaving her head is disgusting. If she wanted attention, she certainly got it. She’s been on several news programs as well as quite a few radio shows. And what she’s been telling them is this. That she came to school yesterday morning with a shaved head, to raise money for leukaemia, which is what her dad is suffering from. That Mrs Tuite called her to her office and told her that shaving her head was disgusting and that she was being suspended for it because Mrs Tuite didn’t want freaks in her school.Does she realise what sort of complications she has caused for Mrs Tuite? Does she realise what a bad name she has put on our school? Why won’t she take responsibility for her actions of not respecting the teachers? Why is she lying to the media and taking this nationwide just to get attention? And why is she proud of all of this? Some people astonish me with their selfishness. With their inability to care for other people’s feelings. With their rudeness and the little amount of respect they have for anyone.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am a student at Mount Alvernia and I have been since grade eight.  I have always been proud to be a Mount Alvernian student and have always taken pride in my school.  My experience of my four years at Mount Alvernia has been nothing but positive.  I have always felt like the teachers are constantly looking out for the students’ best interests.  To believe that something like this would happen at our school is unbelievable.  Who is more believable, a fifteen year old girl who has constantly caused trouble at school, or the principal? For those of you who believe Emily Pridham, perhaps you should visit our school now and see the mayhem and hurt that she has caused in each and every one of us.  Please, don’t judge the rest of the school on the actions of one girl.  There are always two sides to a story and you should never be quick to judge after only hearing one side.

Of course, appearing on Channel 9 in front of her step-mothers Real Estate Agency wearing the company t-shirt was great publicity. And holding the little baby was so sweeeet! You would almost this she was the dearest little girl in Brisbane. Almost. Pardon my cynicism it looks like a good ad campaign to me.

mta rocks

mt alvernia is an amazing school that teaches us the best qualities. Mrs Tuite is being the better person and not fighting back. I think thi isnt completely fair to mta that the media are twisting the story all around SHE WAS NOT SUSPENDED FOR SHAVING HER HEAD it was simply the icing on the cake. I love mta it is the best school and whoever says otherwise doesnt know enough about mta. thanks

Lies are all the media are getting. Mt. A is the best school in brisbane if you ask me and they would never call emily a freak. Emily was NOT suspended for shaving her head she was suspended for swearing at her home room teacher and making people miserable so dont believe for one minute the bull shit Emily has been saying. I dont even go to Mt. A (my sister does) but i know for a fact Mt A. is the best school ever!!

MTA pride

this shit has been taken to far, as a proud mt alvernia student i am disspointed as to how many people are taking this girls accusations so seriously when all thats been heard is what the medias portrayed.there are 2 sides to every story, she was suspended for rude and arrognat behaviour towards teachers and her peers and other ongoing issues, and Dr. Tuitie is really being the better person here.have some common sense and realise how ridculous the concept of being suspended for shaving your hair really is.the fact that emily is supporting the shave for a cure is great but what shes doing is just arrogant and gives a bad name to the school.vanity will see her fall from grace.

A Proud Mt Alvernian

this situation has been taken way to far. yes emily's father has cancer and the whole Mt Alvernian community has supported her in what ever way possible. She approached Dr Tuite last week to discuss the head shaving and Dr Tuite said if you wait till the last week of school we will do a lot of fundraising (as she had only raised about $40). That Friday, Emily verbally abused her homeroom teacher using very inapropriate language (swearing) over the fact that she wanted to leave school early yet the rules are that you must have a note signed by your parents (which she did not have). She was then sent to Dr Tuite's office where she was then suspended for that reason along with other reasons including yelling and swearing at various teachers, being told to remove make-up and nail polish (from the formal the night before which she wasn't supose to go to as she is only in grade 10) but refused. all these things built up and there was no other option for Dr Tuite but to suspend her on the friday. this Monday Emily showed up to school (while suspended) with her head shaven, she was told to go home as she had been suspended the previous friday. Emily has lied to the public and given out school community and Dr Tuite a bad name. I don't wish to be yelled at, sworen at, rubbish thrown at me or being told i should be ashamed of my school because Emily has decided to make up a story for her own 15 minutes of fame. i am a proud current Mt Alvernian and wish no harm on our school or Dr Tuite. Emily is a rude, self-centred lier and she should be ashamed of herself for what she has done. Emily TELL THE TRUTH!!

I've been a student at MTA for 4 years now and not once have I ever seen anything but compassion and kindness displayed by the staff at my school. The full details of what actually occurred - including the fact this girl was suspended on Friday for verbally abusing a teacher was not even published by our principal because she chose to act in a way that supports and relates to what our Franciscan school is all about. The girls of Mt Alvernia have been nothing but supportive we raise over 14,000 for charities every year and the selfishness of this student and the ignorance of the media is shameful. i hope the real story can be told because for a school as fantastic as <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Mt. Alvernia to be criticised and slandered in the way that it is is the real injustice.
