The people of New Orleans have had to deal with many things: annoying tourists trying to get them to take their tops off, killer hurricanes, incompetent leaders who don't protect them from killer hurricanes, and now a never ending cloud of stank. In St. Charles Parish, a Dow chemical plant leaking Ethyl Arcylate is the source of the stinky conditions and has forced an evacuation of neighboring residents.

A foul smell has descended on much of the New Orleans region this morning.  Officials say it isn't dangerous, but people report getting light headed and nauseated.

"It looks like an actual vent ... that may have malfunctioned," said Dow spokesman Tommy Faucheux

Ethyl Acrylate Symptoms:

  • Strong eye, gastrointestinal tract, mucous membrane, and respiratory system irritation.
  • Drowsiness, headaches, and nausea
