From Ezra Klein's blog at the American Prospect comes today's most ridiculous advertising ploy -- the "Linner." You hear "Linner" and you're upset that someone even invented a word for the snack-like meal between lunch and dinner. It gets worse when you learn that the abominable thing is a fabrication of the fast food industry. I'll leave it to the pros to dismiss the L-word with proper scorn.
Apparently, fast food companies are frustrated that people only eat three meals a day, and so are contracting with ad agencies to push the idea of "linner," which is the meal they've made up between lunch and dinner. Obviously, the fast food companies can push whatever moronic ideas they want, but it's pretty clear that regulations should quietly be put into place to jail and reeducate anyone who ever refers to "linner" non-ironically/derisively. Also, "linner" is a really stupid word. They should take a page from my friend Beth and run a campaign against "hanger," which is when you get all irritable at your significant other because you're hungry and they're not ready for dinner yet. Men are from mars and women need some french fries at 4:30pm.
I subscribe to Advertising Age because its writers are right on top of food trends, the latest of which appears to be encouraging people to eat more often. Fast food chains, it seems, are pushing “Linner,” the eating occasion between lunch and dinner. Take a look at what the suggestions are and take a guess at the calories. This must derive from Taco Bell’s Fourth Meal idea of a year or so ago.

eewww this is the last thing North America needs... another excuse to clog the heart with greasey fast food. Breakfast should be the biggest meal of the day, gradually making meals smaller so that you have time to burn off the food before you go to bed. Throwing another mealtime in there won't do anything to compliment the average American's waistline thats for sure.

I think I like the concept, but linner has got to go. I prefer dunch.

No offence, but 'dunch' is awful.

julianw, I like this story. It's good stuff. I agree that "linner" does not sound that appetizing.

In the incredible race to Westernize the world, this photo, taken in the Shanghai Railway Station, illustrates how inescapable ideals of easy-access-consumption truly are. American concepts, like 'linner,' are slowly but surely leaking into every other cultural crack and crevice they can find. Is this really how we want to impact the rest of the world?
