FBI on the Hunt for 'Backpack Bomber Bandits' Believed to Have Robbed Six Banks
The FBI is asking for help catching two wily thieves it has dubbed the "backpack bomber bandits," believed to have orchestrated seven robberies of six banks in the Los Angeles area.
The men, one white and one black, carry a backpack they claim contains a bomb when they go into banks and demand money, the FBI said. While only one man commits each robbery, the FBI suspects the pair are acting in concert.
The bandits wear baseball caps, carry almost identical gear — either a backpack or black gym bag — and make similar threats about carrying a bomb. They hand bank tellers written notes demanding undisclosed amounts of cash, said Laura Eimiller, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Los Angeles bureau.
The "Backpack Bomber Bandits" may have struck again. This time in Orange County. Orange County.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller says a man robbed a Bank of the West in Santa Ana on Wednesday. She did not say how much money he took.
The man is part of a bank-robbing duo that has made a name for itself by taking backpacks or gym bags into banks and threatening tellers with bombs.
Eimiller says the men have robbed eight banks in Los Angeles and Orange counties since the start of June.
Eimiller says the men work separately but both have been spotted together in the same car.
