PROUD Yorkshiremen will fly their flag in York for the first time on Friday without having to pay a charge.

For years anybody who wanted to fly the Yorkshire flag – a white rose on a sky-blue background – had to apply for planning permission to do so.

But now the Flag Institute, which regulates the flags used by counties and other bodies, has finally agreed to register the Yorkshire flag as an official emblem, which means it can be flown without planning permission.

Was there a reason why it wasn't allowed previously?

Personally I have no idea - I do know that the UK have a lot of historical laws that were never overwritten and although not enorced are still part of the laws of the land.

I think only a historian would know the origin of this one.
