Foods celebrated in the month of August
There are several holidays this month, with my favorite theme of course - food, and I think they are great ones to celebrate as we end off the summer. As I'm sure many of you are unaware, August is National Sandwich Month, National Peach Month, and National Catfish Month. I've rounded up some information on these fun holidays.
What is this Holiday for?
To honor and enjoy sandwiches! Let this month be the month you try a new type of sandwich that you've never had before. You just may find a new favorite. Or.... why not have some fun and invent a new sandwich yourself and share it with your family. Another great thing to do is find new recipes for sandwich spreads too! A sandwich is not a great sandwich unless it has a fantastic spread on each sides of the bread.
How can I Celebrate this holiday?
- Have a Sandwich Party! - Sandwich parties are fun! Set your buffee table with a large variety of sandwich products like deli meats, cheese, tomatoes, onions, spreads, condiments etc. and invite all your friends and family over for some great sandwich eating fun. Don't forget the special bread!
- Blog with us about it! - We have a blog called "Everyday is a Holiday" so visit our pages and tell us about your favorite cleaning day or your favorite cleaner recipe.
What is this Holiday for?
This holiday is for honoring and enjoying the great flavor of juicy peaches! So go get yourself a few. Eat them right off the tree, sliced in cream, make peach cobbler with ice cream or you can even blend them in delicious slushies. It doesn't matter how you eat them just as long as during this month you celebrate National Peach month by eating them in as many ways as you can think of
How can this holiday be celebrated?
- By growing your own peach trees.
Learn to cook with peaches!

I was walking around the yard when i saw that a 10 year old peach tree in our front yard had bloomed some peaches! I was thrilled, and took out my camera and took a few shots!

This photo shows the beginning phase of making peach chutney. This is just one of many ways I'm eating peaches this month. I write about my local eating adventures at "The Garden Apartment": http://virginiafoodie.typepad.com

I was at Penticton over the long weekend, and I think they have a peach fest starting on the 5th. Not too sure when it ends, but it is definitely the month of the peach.

The UK Department of Health recommends that people eat their 5-a-day - a minimum 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day so these are some of my 5-a-day which I photographed before eating for dessert after dinner.

This was taken on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Washington, DC at the DuPont Circle Farmers Market. The peaches were so fresh and juicy, they were amazing. Fresh locally grown fruit is the best! Everything at the market was amazing.

The only thing I remember about this photo is, well, how good the sandwich was! During my short visit to Chicago, I went with a friend to a local sandwich joint in the suburbs. I do not recall the name, nor the exact location (hey, I'm bad with directions). But I can tell you that this was a delicious traditional Italian sandwich, and as you can see it consists of basically a bun and some meat. Who needs anything else?

I bought this tree ripened organic peach at the Temescal Farmer's Market in Oakland Ca. It came with an organic fruit variety pack for $5. This was an almost perfect peach. It's texture was firm, but still gave easily with a little prying of the teeth. It was juicy, but not mushy and dripping. It was really sweet and just a little tart. It filled my head with that wonderful peach aroma, like it was injected with it. I can't wait to get another this weekend!

Jack in the Box has always been my favorite fast food. They have buttermilk ranch sauce that makes everything delicious, and although the spicy chicken sandwich meal is plenty enough food for me and then some, how could one resist an order of egg rolls to top it off??

These are Japanese Water Peaches we bought at a 360 supermarket in Hong Kong. They are extremely sweet, fragrant, and juicy. They taste like Japanese peach drinks.
The first time I had one in Tokyo, the peach dripped juices out as if I poured an entire bottle of peach drink down my arms. They are very expensive ($45 HKD each which is about $6 USD). Oh, but they are worth it. During my trip, my sister and I shared three.

This was a sandwich I had never encountered before, containing two of my favorite things...oysters and bacon! I think it would be best enjoyed on its own...alas, we received this after a long line of appetizers, and sent it back to be cut in half...which diminished its crispness. But I would definitely try it again, if I was in New Orleans and had the wonderful opportunity to go to Cochon again.

I don't know what this means. What does pre-conditioned peaches mean? What does it mean for the peaches and what does it mean for someone who eats them? Is it something I should just ignore? Is it a good thing? Is it a descriptive term that is supposed to make me want to buy the peaches more...say, like "organic"? So, then, I would be like, "$1.99 a pound.....kinda high.....but.......they ARE pre-conditioned.....I guess I'll take two." Or is it more of a warning-label-type term that is only on the sign because it's required by law to be there or something? I don't know if it's good or bad and I am like too embarrassed to ask......so instead.............I just take a picture and figure I'll think about it later!
