Vandals City, you want to live here?
The french city name "Vantoux" translates into "Home of the vandals" Also, the current situation in Wall street, ...oh don't get me started.

Find the Link to the Mayor's page, ....Dear Vandal citizens

Le mot du maire
From the desk of the Mayor:

Choisissons ensemble le nom des habitants de Vantoux
Let's decide the name for the inhabitants of Vandals city....

Il se trouve que cette expression, devenue synonyme de destruction et de haine de la civilisation
We find the expression Vantoux could mean Vandals, is the synonyme for destruction, hate of any civilization.....

Pour mettre fin à une éventuelle confusion, je propose que nous choisissions ensemble le nom des habitants de notre commune.
To end possible confusion, I propose we choose a new name for the inhabitants of our community

The deadline for proposals August 2008, end of September the village will have a new name. The joking about citizens from Vandals City will have a final end.

History explainer:
1,600 years ago, the Vandals invaded Gaul (France)

1,600 years ago, on December 31, 406, the Vandals invaded Gaul, now known as France. Europe was going through a minor ice age. The Rhine had frozen over. Several Germanic tribes, the Vandals, Suebians, Alamannians, Alans and Burgundians, fleeing the Huns, crossed the river near Mainz and invaded Gaul.

80 000 vandals conquer North Africa, invade  Rome

In 429 an army of 80,000 Vandals crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and invaded North Africa. Ten years later they conquered Carthage. Another 16 years later, in 455, they crossed the Mediterranean and attacked Rome from the sea. They sacked Rome in an orgy of violence that lasted two weeks and earned their reputation as “vandals.”By 462 the Vandals ruled North Africa, the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily. In 468 they defeated a Byzantine (Eastern Roman) fleet

Vandals on the way...
The Vandals went first down to southern spain, crossed Gribraltar and found a save haven, their stronghold in Carthage North Africa. From here they attacked Europe direction north, like the pirates of the Caribbean.

Roman senator Cato the Elder
went crazy about the wild guys from Carthage.

"Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam"

thats how he ended every speech in the senat.
"Carthage must be destroyed"

Well today, Vandals in every society, destroying public property

I dunno... I kind of like it. Like in High Plains Drifter, when Clint Eastwood's character changed the town's name to "Hell" to scare off the approaching bad guys.

Thanks Jordan for Flag "French city dumping name, why?", your comment ..."High Plains Drifter" with the name "HELL" fits to "Vandals city"

Slightly related and amusing, I used to work in broadcasting in a small town which was known for it's very large insane asylum. The High School mascot was (and as of last check still is) the Maniacs, an image of a crazed humanoid in a straight jacket. I kid You Not.

Actually I do not live to awfully far away from a College who's mascot/team name is the Vandals !! The University Of Idaho.

I also used to live in the city of Richland which is basically the home base for the Hanford Nuclear project. Their High School team name is the Bombers with a "mushroom cloud" as a logo....

SOLARLIFE, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Very interesting. I don't think I would care too much, as it has always been called that - but I guess for some, it would be an issue, clearly..

Thanks amyjudd for Flag "Vandals city dumbs its name", you say "I don't think I would care too much", I agree in anglosaxon or american environment more tolerance, but imagine in France looking first to the culture.... a new name is a good idea for children in school..., i update for the new name selected end of month.
