Fruit Bats Perform Oral Sex to Prolong Copulation

Researchers in Guangzhou, China discovered that female Chinese Fruit Bats (cynopterus sphinx) give oral sex to its male counterparts to prolong copulation.  They found out that each second of licking added an additional 6 seconds of copulation.

The mating habits of bats have been quite a bit of mystery to humans, primarily because their nocturnal habits and natural habitats have made them very difficult to study.  Researchers from Guangdong Entomological Institute in Guangzhou, China used a night-vision camera to capture all their activities.

"We did not expect fellatio in fruit bats at the beginning," said researcher Libiao Zhang, a biologist at the Guangdong Entomological Institute in Guangzhou, China. "We were also surprised at how often it occurred."

The act of fellatio is something that is not usually performed by animals except for humans.  Bonobos have been observed to give fellatio, but they tend to do it more for play than for sex.
