In the early of July, the government is raising the 12 kg gas price 17.5% from Rp 51,000 to Rp 63,000. Even the gas supply and distribution is safe, but the price is hiking up to Rp 70,000 at retailer. This condition is surely burdening the society especially for food traders.

Rahayu (35), the owner of Warung Tegal (Warteg) at Cawang East Jakarta, said the new price of gas is burdening her much. She got confused because of this problem. In the other sides, she will lose her customer if the food price is raised up, while she got bankrupt if the food price is still the same. “I must reduce the portion to keep the effort alive,” said Rahayu, Wednesday (2/7).

The same think was also stated by Taripah (50), Warteg owner at Kampung Melayu. Taripah admitted facing the increased of gas price fourth times since the gas price was Rp 50,000, Rp 54,000, Rp 57,000, and now Rp 70,000.

The new gas price is not disturbing its stock in East Jakarta. Koko, the gas agent owner, explained the gas stock is safe. “The stock is safe even the price is raising up,” explained Koko.

We need to make our society less dependent on an oil based economy. We should be pushing public transportation not more drilling. They will take the same amount of time to implement.

I took this photo on my vacation to California with my family. We were driving through St. Helena and I wanted to show everybody back home (Gig Harbor, Washington) the gas prices in Cali, which is about 20¢ more.
