Gentleman, start your pumpkins! by tracey.wooden

October 12th, 2008 marked the 10th Annual Pumpkin Regatta in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada.

It all started with Howard Dill (R.I.P) whose giant pumpkins have made it into the Guinness World Record Books four times! Howard's son Danny suggested that the pumpkins be raced across lake Pisaquid in 1999.   That first year, with a budget of $50.00, 2000 spectators came out to see five brave souls paddle across the lake.

This year, Z104.5 and K-Rock 89.3 FM joined in the fun as announcers and paddlers.  The paddling category had 60 entries, including a late entry from Bathurst, New Brunswick.  Two racers competed in the motorized category.

The banks of the lake were packed with eager spectators cheering loudly.  People are coming from all parts of the world to watch the Pumpkin Regatta and join in the other Pumpkin festivities.

Leo Swinamer, who is in his 70's, of New Ross, Nova Scotia has won the race the last few years, but was unable to participate this year due to his pumpkin sinking during trial runs.  However, Leo's nephew, Anthony Cook did win this year.

First prize in each of the categories takes home $200.00.

The Pumpkin Regatta is always a laugh, and if you're ever in Windsor, Nova Scotia on the second Sunday of October, be sure to stop by and check it out!
